The Price Of Things

This is, palpably, a beautiful scarf. The price attached to it is irrelevant to its beauty.

And yet people care about price. There are normal reasons for that: (1) to evaluate whether the scarf is "worth" its cost (meaning whether, compared to other goods, the scarf is fairly-priced, overly-expensive, or a bargain), and (2) to decide whether you individually can or should purchase it depending on your financial and personal circumstances.

There is another reason people often care about price and that is to express surprise and even outraged condemnation at the high cost of luxury items.

The price for this scarf is $995.00. How does that knowledge make you feel?

The scarf is made by Yves Saint Laurent and is cashmere. It can be purchased at:

I heard about this scarf on Isabel's blog (http://www.walkoffashion.com/). Her reaction to its cost amused me: she wrote, "I saw the price and my mouth dropped open. $995 for a scarf?! ...I can buy a bag for that much money!"

  5. I thought it was another lucky thrift store find, honestly! Many designer things are worth the price because they are either rare to find or incredibly well made (i.e., impossible to find of equal quality for cheaper), but this type of scarf is probably not one of them.

Interestingly, I did an article a while back called Why Is Designer Stuff So Expensive talking about this very subject.

  6. Oh my goodness! I was expecting it had come from a thrift shop or something! The bit about the bag really cracked me up. Where is the market for this?

  8. She can buy a BAG for $995????? Wow, I am in the wrong line of work then!! lol I won't pay more than $30 for a purse and definitely not more than that for a scarf. Some things are worth the extra cost, for sure, but a scarf...just thinking about spending that on a scarf makes my insides hurt. haha

  9. Yikes, I can pay my mortgage for that kinda money :P That's the same way I feel about high dollar designer fashion buys recommended by Corporette, one of the first style blogs I followed for career wear. I'd have to live in my car to buy that stuff!
