First Outfit of 2016

Happy New Year! I hope your holiday was fun. Isn't it odd to see the number 2016? It'll take me a month to stop writing 2015 on my checks.

For my first outfit of the year, I thought I'd continue exploring something I wore last year -- the ignoble skirt-suit. Normally worn by middle-aged women, the skirt-suit has (to me, at least) an appealing femininity. Plus, it's halfway toward an outfit by itself since the skirt and top match.

I found a cute one at a thrift-store in pretty yellow. I'm belting it for structure and using sparkly gold fishnets to add shine to my legs. What do you think?

Best of all, the outfit showcases a Christmas gift from my dear friend Jessica. Her blog is one of the best around; go check it out. Jessica saw how much I enjoyed my mermaid post last year so she got me a pretty mermaid necklace. I love it!

  1. First of all HNY friend ! I certainly hope that 2016 is a marvelous year.
I think this outfit works well. When I read the description, the gold tights sounded a bit too much - but I think it totally rocks. Hugs.

  2. That color looks nice on you, yellow can be hard to pull off. And you gams are pretty good looking!

  3. I once heard a stylist proclaim, "No one looks good in yellow." I disagree - I think everyone can find a shade of yellow that suits them, and you prove my point! Yellow is such a happy color, too, that I don't know why anyone would deny themselves the pleasure of wearing it.
The gold fishnets are a subtle, fun touch and that necklace is beautiful!

  4. Checks? You still write checks? ;-P

I love the suit - what a great cut on you, and shows how tiny you actually ARE! I think the bright yellow top underneath is not quite the right tone - too cool of a yellow with the suit being more in the warm tone family. I love that you belted it. I'll be wearing a skirt suit this week at some point too!

Love that necklace. What a lovely gift.

    1. You Canadians are way ahead of us in how you buy stuff. I was surprised to see, when visiting Vancouver, that everyone uses credit cards. Many Americans still use cash and checks.

  5. Love the stockings on you - if my legs were as shapely as yours, I'd wear them, too! Unfortunately I tend toward the dreaded cankles :)

  6. Happy New Year Lovely!

    I had to laugh at Sheila's comment...I thought the same ; P

Don't your legs look extra lovely in those sparkly hose?

And I love that you belted it. It gives you a great hourglass shape.

    1. Thanks, dear. Not actually an hourglass; more like a tall glass that's being pinched in the middle. :-)

  7. Happy New Year!
Checks?!? That's a blast from the past, haven't seen one since the 80's... But I totally get your point about getting used to 2916, that will take some time.
And the suit is very classy! I wonder how it would look like with a t-shirt? Or the skirt with some leather? Will Ally's biker chick personality finally come out in 2016?

  8. Everything about this outfit is so classic, sophisticated and gorgeous, Ally. It is honestly one of my favourite looks of yours to date and I'm flat out honoured that you included the charming mermaid necklace I gave you as part of this elegant (and wonderfully retro influenced) ensemble. Thank you sweetly for doing so (and for the endlessly kind words about my site).

Wishing you a fabulous first week of January and rest of the year from start to finish!

    ♥ Jessica

  12. I love suit dressing, I miss that most of all in today's work wear. I always felt polished in the 80's and 90's, now it is so hard to find good work wear and I have succumbed to the casual effect. Another trend I loved in the 90's was suit vests and loved wearing them with blouses and a brooch at the neck.

I love the suit on you, I think the shirt is a little off tone. The sparkly fishnets are FABULOUS!

Loving the mermaid necklace! I actually have one that is made from glass that I wear.

  13. Belting is a nice touch and that necklace from Jessica is so lovely. Looking very glamourous in those sparkly tights too! You have such fine pins, Ally! (pins = legs over here)
I would also agree with Sheila about the blouse being a tad too sharp a yellow against the soft colour of the suit but the suit is such a fantastic cut on you.
I've still not got use to writing 2015 let alone 2016!

  14. What a cute skirt suit this is. I agree with the others that it is a very good idea to belt it. It suits you fine. For me (but I am a bit conservative) it is a little bit on the short side. Is there a hem in it you can let out? The tapering is perfect though.

    1. Thank you, Greetje. All skirts are short on me because their normal-length looks shorter on my height. I could pull this one down several inches and wear it lower, but I'm not conservative or modest about my legs.

  20. Happy new year! This is such a magical look. Orange is definitely my favorite color, and you are rockin' it. How cool is that necklace too

  21. Well someone started the year with a fabulous ensemble! Love the ladylike suit, the belt is a great addition, and as you might predict, I adore the gold fishnets! I think this outfit needs something a bit unconventional, and the touch of metallic is so 16! Way to ring it in!

  22. I really, really love this outfit and I'm not usually a fan of skirt suits since they always seem so unmovable (or maybe it's because I'm associating them with interviews??). The color is beautiful on you--and how special and sweet is that little mermaid!

  23. The snappy yellow belt and sparkly tights make this anything but a middle-age outfit. WELL DONE. Looks great on you!
