Baton Twirling

I just added a new item to my Bucket List -- I want to learn how to twirl a baton!

I saw some girls doing it on TV and got inspired. Twirling involves coordination, skill and also includes dance (which is my all-time favorite activity). Looking into twirling, I discovered that twirlers are called "majorettes"

Did you ever twirl a baton? Was it fun? Was it hard?

  1. Fun! You should totally learn. My mom was a baton twirler when she was younger and as kids we always used to bug her to twirl her baton for us. It's really so cool to watch. Especially when they do the tosses high into the air.

  2. Oh yes I bet you could rock baton twirling! I had some friends at school who used to do this, they were super good at it and would go to competitions at the weekends. They had cool girly outfits and wore loads of bright makeup to do their acrobatics while twirling the baton. I remember they'd always do a performance at school talent nights. We would have been about 8/9 at the time. I tried; they would let me have a go and try to show me - I was no good!

  3. Haha, believe or not, I used to do this a lot. I was in gymnastics and had to learn baton twirling. This brings back so many memories. Enjoy your twirling! <3

  4. I took baton for a few years. I stopped after a recital where I had to throw it high in the air and catch it on my shoulders and flip it around. I dropped it. I was horrified. Just horrified. My parents and family were in the audience. I think that is when I started to have a fear of stages. I quit shortly after that. Prior to that though I did enjoy it : ) I could probably still do quite a few of the tricks.

    1. I'm so sorry, Suzanne. Not that you dropped the baton but that it scarred you so badly. I know that feeling. Imagine a 10-year old boy letting a ground-ball go through his legs while his father yells at him. We need to let that stuff go and focus on the joys of physical activity. Today, I love to throw a baseball around and I don't think about keeping score or being competitive. I'd like to see you do baton-tricks. Maybe I'll bring one to our meeting in July...

  5. My marching band had majorettes! They even twirled fire batons sometimes. It's a hard task and requires a lot of practice. I hope you intend to blog your journey as you learn how to twirl! I'd love to see a video someday :)

  10. ALL of my girlfriends were on the majorettes squad in high school. They were AMAZING!!! They tried to teach me, but I was hopeless. So, was it hard? For them, no. For me, yes. But I can go to the hoop!

  11. As a kid I use to pretend I was a baton twirler and got okay with it. Once I threw it up into the air and it came down on my head. Bonk!

  12. I've always been fascinated by baton twirling. In college we had the most amazing baton twirler (majorette?) who would perform with the band during half time shows. She was insane and would do flips and crazy jumps and sometimes use batons with fire on either side.

  13. Very cool! I was crazy into baton twirling as a child. Just at a hobby level, but goodness did I spend countless hours playing around with one. I'd even take my favourite baton to school, play with it at lunchtime and spin/twirl/throw/etc on my walk home afterwards (in hindsight, it was a good weapon, though thankfully I never needed to use it for self defense purposes).

Good luck with learning - it's addictively fun once you get started! :)
