Thoughts On Our Next Holiday

With today being the last day of January, around the corner is Valentine's Day.  Do you welcome it?  Dread it?  Celebrate it?

I like V-Day.  I use it as an excuse to send cute cards to my friends.  I never tire of that.

How 'bout you?  What do you do?  Do you remember when you were a child you'd run around the class handing out tiny "valentines"?

  1. I adored and loathed that day all at once. Everyone was so worried if they would get enough Valentine's.

  2. Reasons why we're friends: I'm one of the rare people that LOVES Valentine's day. I love chocolate and hearts and any excuse to wear obnoxious amounts of pink- I love it! :-D

  3. I actually love Valentine's day! For me, it's not so much about romantic love (that's what anniversaries are for celebrating!) but rather a sort of second Thanksgiving to be grateful for all of the people in your life who you care about. Plus, who doesn't love wearing a red dress?!

  4. I am ambivalent about the day. As a school kid, I loathed it because it meant writing my name and their name on cards. And what if I picked the wrong one and they got the wrong idea? (I was 7, for God's sake).

Now I enjoy it as reasons to eat yummy candy, go out to eat with the DH who always surprisingly takes me somewhere ridiculously amazing, and of course send cute cards.

  5. I'm not a huge fan of it personally, but I love making it special for my kids. My husband & I don't exchange anything or do anything special for each other, that was something we decided on long ago. Even though I'm not a huge fan I do think, at its core, when you take away all the "Hallmark holiday-ness" it's a nice holiday. What's not to like about taking a day to make a point of telling the people you love that you love them? :)

  6. I remember making and sending cards to boys I liked. Last year, I hid kit kat chocolate bars in all the teachers' postboxes st school. X

  7. It makes no difference to me, like birthdays, fathers day and christmas. We should as much with our loved ones and not have one specific day to appreciate them.

  8. I like Valentines day, it's a sentimental day. We usually chill out and eat a little chocolate & drink a nice bottle of wine.

  9. Though I am a definite romantic and "lover of love", my adoration for Valentine's Day generally has less to do with that side of things more with the fact that I adamantly believe it's an excellent reasons to stop and take stop, much as with Thanksgiving, of the people and things in your life that you love and are thankful for. And so, for that reason above all else, I will always delight in the return of February 14th.

  10. I like Valentine's Day.
I don't expect chocolates or red roses, though I wouldn't ever say no to sweeties and oriental lilies and I don't expect a fancy dinner out as I'm more than happy to phone an order through to Pizza Express and go and pick it up and enjoy a meal at home. I would though like a card as I'm a sentimental soul. Easily pleased, me :)

  11. I like V-Day, ever since I realized I should spread the love outward, instead of expecting it to come to me. You get what you give! And I always wear pink and red!

  12. I remember loving Valentine's Day as a child - so much anticipation reading those little cards! I always give my boys a special treat, but that's about the extent of our celebration these days!

  13. I am mostly ambivalent towards Valentine's Day unless someone gives me chocolate. Then I am quite happy. It is my belief that showing love to family and friends, kindness and affection to all others and enjoying the love that is shown to me can and should be done on all days of the year. For that matter, this also applies to chocolate. xoxo

  14. I never celebrated Valentines and I think I never will... when I lived in Ohio in 2013 I got some chocolate from my roomates for the first and only time in my life. I prefer to celebrate love every single day :D

  15. Nate and I have always said we don't need a special day to celebrate our love when we do that every day - not to mention, our dating anniversary was in March so we wouldn't always make a big deal, but in recent years we've decided, let's start spoiling ourselves a little bit - especially now that we are parents, we take a little time out and it's nice.

  16. I have always loved holidays, no matter how cheesy. In school I would buy Valentine's Day cards for all of my friends, and candy, and pass them out. Kyle and I have gone out before, and we have stayed in. This year, we are *hopefully* having some friends over to play Cards Against Humanity.

  17. Goodness! Whenever I read one of your posts, I always get so inspired to write a post based on something you made me think of. How do you do that, Ally? :)

I also like to give my friends little v day presents. It's fun! Valentine's Day isn't always about a romantic love, but about a love in general. More people need to remember this!

  18. Since going out for dinner on Valentines became a hellish nightmare I just stopped going out that day.
I don't really celebrate it, but do enjoy the gifts :)

  19. We don't really make it a huge deal, as Valentine's Day is not the only day we say I love you. But, its's fun to go out, although I'd rather enjoy a romantic night at home. I remember in school getting little cards and presents, how fun and innocent we all were then! :) xo

  20. We don't celebrate it. It's always seemed like a contrived sort of thing to me. But I'm lucky to have a Hubby who lets me know all the time how much he loves me. It sure is nice getting a cute card in the mail from a friend, though. 😄

  21. I had loved V day as a child, from the little pastel heart candies, with the insipid little sayings.. even then I knew fluff when I read it, but I love them anyway.
Now I consider it a Hallmark Holiday and an excuse to buy something nice for myself. My hubby is always happy when i do. We exchange funny cards, and it is nice, all and all, commercial as it is.

  22. Not part of my childhood. Comes too close to hubby's birthday so is forgotten until prompted...like this! Hmm, what can I get someone on a diet for V Day? xo JJ

  23. I remember it as a child, very fun and always good for a day of parties and no class ;) Now, we just get the kids something, exchange small gifts and cards and then go out to dinner. I do try to send my parents cards but I usually forget to post them and end up handing them over! LOL

  24. I hardly celebrate it, but LOVED getting your card! :-)

    Have a great week,

P.S.: Thanks for leaving such nice comment on my last post!

  25. I usually think it is overrated but this year I think I want to go to more effort.

  26. Valentines day usually means there are cupcakes somewhere...so yeah. I love Valentines Day.

  27. We (hub and I) do not really celebrate Valentine's day. Why? Well, what is it actually? To remember love? We remember love everyday - as I clenched my teeth trying not to be pissed at him, as he tolerated my laptop addiction.. Time to go out and be together? We do that every week, be it in a run down no name eatery or a fine dinning restaurant.. to exchange gift and flowers? I have a rule for my husband - don't buy me flowers coz they'd die in 2 days! So every now and then, we'd plant something in the garden instead. The last one was an olive tree! So, to us Valentine's is just another day coz everyday is Valentine's day.. one way or another. Hope you have a great one this year!

  28. i LOVE it. i think it's silly to get so mad over it. i see it as a day to celebrate love for everyone, for all types of love, not just romantic. too commercial? well, let's get rid of presents for christmas! love should be celebrated everyday? so should moms and dads, etc instead of once a year. don't get your panties in a wad. it's just love. glad you enjoy it as well!!!!

i don't mind the day, although it's more for the kids.
