Twenty years ago, a woman enjoying the summer sun in New York was arrested for not wearing a top. She argued in court that it was unconstitutional to allow men to be topless and not women. She won that argument. Ever since 1992, it has been legal for women to be topless in New York City, so long as they don't do it for commerce.
This week, a group of women sought to popularize the notion by reading books in Central Park while topless. The article is here and a non-lewd photo is below.
Some Caribbean and European countries allow this. What do you think?
I'd probably do it! I mean, hey, whynot? You only live once and it is only fair!
ReplyDeletei think it's a great idea. i'm not sure i'm secure enough to do it but... it gets so so so hot here and i often look at men who get to pull their shirts off when they get too sweaty with envy! bras are HOT!
ReplyDeleteI think that a woman should have the same choice as any man to take off her top. It's about equality. The problem is that women's breasts that been so sexualized in popular media that people have become so uncomfortable with this whole idea.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and good topic Shybiker.
B
I think that if you are comfortable doing it, go for it.
ReplyDeleteI've been topless maybe once or twice in a beach..
Hmmmm...it all sounds good and fair on paper and I suppose if a lady really wants to do something like that, then she can. I personally don't think I would do it legal or not. Perhaps if it was a common thing it would loose it's novelty, then nobody would care one way or the other.
ReplyDeleteGood question Shy B.
OH! I'm passing on the Blogger Appreciation Award to you.
At the beach perhaps but it still catches me off guard to see a lady topless (the other week I saw a lady with a Mohawk rollerblading through our financial district topless- that was pretty wild!) I will admit that it makes me uncomfortable but that's just because of how the media has sexualized breasts.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be bothered if someone was topless, but I probably wouldn't do it. Not because of body image issues - no, I've run around too many conventions in rather risque costumes with thousands of people around. But I burn terribly in the sun, lol! Even with sunscreen, I certainly wouldn't want burned boobs.
ReplyDeleteI really believe that is their rights, and don't see what the big deal is. It's not something I would personally do, but that doesn't mean I don't think others should be able to practice their freedom. Have a fabulous day!

I'm feministy, but it bothers me, and I can't explain exactly why.
ReplyDeleteBut to be fair, topless men kind of bother me too. Unless they're ripped and in my bedroom.
If you want to, then go for it. Though I wouldn't be comfortable baring it all! :)

I might breast feed in the park, but i don't want to get too much sun there :)
ReplyDeletei did not know that! my kids always ask me why it's ok for me to go topless and not women. now i can tell them to go to NYC! i think it's perfectly fine, as long as the women are comfortable with it! (i wouldn't be....maybe 20 years ago!)
ReplyDeletegr8 post....its not much of a issue about equality rather its about being urself n respecting every gender nt fetishising over it...
ReplyDeleteIn Europe, nudity is fine, they go topless on the beach and naked in the sauna in public with no problems. The Brits do it when they get drunk a lot but don't get naked or topless on a regular basis. When I sit on the beach in Israel, the Israelis like to go topless and sometimes naked and that is accepted
