Exploring Frontiers

I like to explore.  To go where no man has gone before.  Literally.

Women's fashion is still new to me.  It has unknown territory.  To grow and learn, I take chances.  I experiment.  With colors, fabrics and designs.

Today, I tried several new things.  I found a top whose shape and design are new to me; I've never worn anything like it.  It's triangular with wide arm-openings.  Plus its color is beyond easy description.  I don't know what you'd call it.

Pairing the color of the top with a different color of stocking seemed a risky choice -- the two colors don't match but they don't clash either.  What do you call it when that happens?  In photos, the stockings appear paler than in real-life.

As an experienced woman, what's your professional opinion of this?

  1. I'd call that Teal .. I'm sorry but I really dont like that top on you. The colour is great but the shape just looks all wrong to me, personally I'd like it better I think if the neck line came down a bit more I think. It's just not a flattering shape, but then I'm not a fashion anything so what do I know :)

I love the stockings with that skirt, I would just put them with a different top :)

    1. Thank you for the feedback, buddy. It helps me.

  2. Where did you get those perfect mint colored tights? I've been looking for a pair like that. They're so pretty!

I really like this outfit. I would wear this myself, actually. I find myself saying that a lot when I see your outfit pictures :) Although...I personally wouldn't wear the tights with it. And that's only because I usually don't wear tights with longer skirts. I have thin calves that look even thinner with tights and longer length skirts. So I stay away from that combination :)

    Cute shoes!

  3. I think you nailed it! Love the colour combination and the soft ruffles with the polka dots and the structured skirt is lovely.

  4. Hi! I'm not invisible anymore so I feel like I am more socially acceptable now! I think your outfit is great and I would call that blouse aqua. On my monitor the tights look very pale, nearly white with a hint of mint. It looks like they go really well with the top but don't compete with it. Are the dots on the skirt navy blue? The shoes look to be navy and I love them!

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Shawna. I'm glad you're more visible now. Your comment raises an important point for which there's no easy answer -- colors online look different than in real-life. And different on different monitors. It's a little frustrating to discuss color with people when we're all looking at something different. Oh, well...

  5. Love the color combo!!! I think I would add a little cardigan. Maybe black lace. Just a thought. You look sexy as shit in teal!!!

    1. That's a great idea! And I even own a black lace one.

  6. I think it's teal. Maybe sea green? I like trying wild colors too.

  7. I have difficulty naming colors, but I would also call this teal...or a marine green. I think you did a great job coordinating the color of the top and stockings. I usually say, if things aren't matchy matchy, but look nice together...that they "go together" or are complimentary to one another. I'm not sure if there is a technical fashion term for it though.
You look very pretty. The outfit has a vintage vibe and I can see a lovely strand of choker pearls accessorizing the neckline.

    1. Yes, pearls would have enhanced it. Thanks for the tip, Lisa.

  8. That really is a strikingly lovely hue. It's teal meets tropical sea turquoise to my eyes.

I like this polka dot skirt a lot too, its shape has a certain charming 1930s feel to it (which is highlighted all the more by those terrific ankle heels).

    1. You popped into my head while I was constructing this, Jessica, because I felt a vintage vibe coming over me.

  9. I love all the elements of this outfit except the top- I am not keen in those sort of top with flounces of fabric like this but that's just my taste, no reflection on you! The colour, however, is my favourite! Id call it turquoise! X

    1. Your opinion counts, buddy. I'm not sure I like it either; just taking it out for a ride. We never know until we try something.

  10. This color is what I would call teal. I am not a big fan of the top, but I am not much of a ruffly type dresser. I think the skirt would have looked better with a more fitted top. With that being said, the polka dot skirt and those shoes are freaking fabulous!

  11. The lower half I love. Beautiful ladylike perfection. I want those shoes.

    The top...not-so-much.

    You could do WAY better.

It isn't doing you any favours.

    Get my drift? ; )

The shape that top is giving you is all wrong. The lower half is all right but the upper half is taking away all the shine. It's not the colour either, which is lovely on you. It is the top itself. I don't know who came up with that design it but I honestly cannot see it flattering anyone.

Just keeping it real here : )

  12. Hello! I think the color is amazing on you, but the top isn't the most flattering shape for you. I think something a little more form fitting.
as for the skirt and shoes? They are awesome!

  13. Love the outfit, especially the tights with the skirt and shoes. And of course, the longer hair is so flattering and feminine. The tights may not be the same color as the top, but they "go"...complement each other. Brava!

  14. this pretty shoes!!!
the outfit is perfect with the colors and this skirt is beautiful and very flattering - but the cut of the top.... it seems that it is made for girls with a skinny upper body. your neck and arms look bigger as they are in this. you need more fabric around your shoulders and less at your waist. your tops should be triangles standing on the corner. :-)

  15. I think the stockings look great. I'm not sure my opinion is a professional woman's though. I like bright, mismatched things in general. Hell, I'm a walking oxymoron really. lol. I love the shoes! So cute! I'm not a big fan of the top. I think you look better in something more shape fitting. I do love the color of it though. It looks great on you.

  16. Color me the outlier, I like the top. It's definitely different, and doesn't lend itself to the traditional hourglass shape, but it looks artistic and funky. Maybe it's just my personal opinion - I like things that are different and outside the expected norm.

(Also my computer monitor washed out your tights. I didn't realize they were meant to be mint! They look almost white to me)

  17. I like the top - I think it's a good color and I really like the skirt with it! In my opinion I'd just do different tights - or maybe even just nude nylons. Otherwise I think it works well!

    1. Nice idea. I wrestle with what to put on my legs when assembling outfits. I'm never sure on that.

  18. Those tights are AMAZING. The skirt suits you well. I think the top is quite nice but I'm not sure it goes with the skirt--the top is very flowy and kinda artsy, but the skirt is almost prim with its long lines and neat pleats. With something equally flowy, almost kind of boho, I think you could rock that top!

You look great, as usual. The shoes are killer too. :)

  19. Catching up to my blogs from the weekend, so here's my assessment: I love the skirt with the top. The polka dots look amazing next to that aqua-y blue. I like the tights, but I dunno if I personally would wear them with this outfit. And gurrrrl those shoes!!!

  20. I adore you my dearest Ally but I don't like this look on you :-(. Each element on its own is pretty, but together, its just not working in m.h.o.

When I was in high school, we wore uniforms to school and one day we had a civvies day and its always stuck in my mind what one of my friends mom said ... your hem should never be darker than your shoes (that I don't totally buy into) and your top should never be darker than your bottom (skirt, trouser) ... I don't believe rules are set in stone and that's why I wear black and brown together, but often, when applying what she said, an outfit looks more balanced, specially when keeping the top light ... just something that I use in my everyday dressing and it works for me.

Love seeing all this experimenting and its great to have images of our outfits to refer back to ... it helps us learn what works for us and what doesn't.

    Have a happy Hump day

  22. Just catching up; read your post on the reaction before I got to this one.

I too really like the color of the top and think it's interesting, but I agree that its shape isn't very flattering. However, I do think it would look cool as a cropped jacket, so you could get the advantage of the ruffles and cut while still showing your waist and the long contour you have going with your skirt and stockings. (I don't know if that's possible, though!)

  23. I like it, i think you are getting better.
My only recommendation would be to belt it, that way you can have a better shape :)
