It's Oscar Week!

It's Oscar Week!  As an avid cinemaphile, I look forward to the Academy Awards the way some people anticipate the SuperBowl.  It's the high point of my movie-viewing season.

This year, in fact, I convinced Robin to let me throw a big party at which a dozen of our friends are going to watch the ceremony on our big-ass TV while dining on fancy food.  I'm inviting all of our guests to try their luck at guessing the winners and giving a prize for the best ballot.

Since you, too, are my friends, I thought it'd be fun to play with you guys as well.  If you want to try your luck, just pick who you think will win the major categories.  After the ceremony, we'll see who chose the most winners.  The winner will get one of these...

The way to play is simple.  The choices are listed below.  For each category, pick one (by letter) and leave a comment with your selections.  For example, your entry should look like this: 1.a. 2.b. 3.c. 4.d. 5.e. 6.f.

If you have any questions or prefer to play privately, you can e-mail me at fhu@pipeline.com.  If you don't want to play but just want to talk about which movies you like, go right ahead.  Let's have fun!

  6. I do an Oscar night - my best friend comes over, we have food and wine, watch the red carpet, and we have printed ballots from Oscar.com (btw, I don't think that's a picture of an Oscar you have up there). We've done this ever year for over 30 years!

    My guesses:
    1.E
    2.D
    3.D
    4.A
    5.D
    6.D

  7. Well, I've seen five of the best picture nominees which is pretty good for me (my track record is pretty bad with new releases usually). I'll give it a whirl:

    1. C (I don't really think this will win, but I think it was the best of the nominees that I saw)
    2. D
    3. D
    4. A
    5. D (but I have no idea)
    6. D

Right, I'm sure some of that is wishful thinking on my part, but I have to say I thought Inception was wonderful and Black Swan a bit overrated, but I hope Nathalie Portman wins anyway because I've liked her for years (same with Colin Firth). And Biutiful was the most depressing damn film I've seen in ages, and I hope it wins nada nada nada for being to relentlessly horrible!

  10. I do Oscar night with my sisters every year. I am counting down the days! Here are my predictions:

Best Picture: The Social Network (I really want Inception to win because it's more original & the beautifully done, but after it was practically robbed at the Golden Globes...I'm not too sure it will.)

    Best Actor: Colin Firth

Best Actress: This is a hard one since I'm not too thrilled on the nominees, but my guess is Natalie Portman.

    Best Supporting Actor: Geoffrey Rush

Best Supporting Actress: Helena Bonham Carter

(OK, I confess, the last two are who I *want* to win, but whatever)

Best Director: Actually...I'm really disappointed that Christopher Nolan didn't get nominated in this category. Instead he got nominated for Best Screenplay which doesn't make sense because, to me, he's a better director than writer...Maybe he should've been nominated for both...Anyway, I *think* David Fincher might win.

OKAY. I need to come out of my "film-nerd-mode". I'm tempted to go on to tell you who I think should win in the other categories, but this comment is long enough, I think. :)

(Not a "regular" so, you don't have to include me in the game, but this is an awesome idea!)

  11. Nynga, you're included!

And I corrected the statue-picture. Thanks, Sheila!

  12. Hm, I've only seen 4 of those movies. And I'm torn between what I think should happen, and what I think WILL happen. But this is a prediction, right? So here goes...

    2. B
    3. D
    4. didn't see any of these movies
    5. D
    6. A but I wish it would be E

I should go see the King's Speech tomorrow. I'm taking the day off and that would be an excellent plan, I think.
