Grooming On The Run

Last week, I was driving Gina and pulled up to a red-light. I glanced over and, next to me, was a woman driving her car. She was about 25 years old. The woman's sun-visor was down and she was staring intently into its mirror. I watched as she applied mascara. Then I saw her use one of those medieval-looking metal devices to curl her eyelashes. Then she started the process on her other eye. She was totally engrossed in her personal grooming.

The traffic-light changed to green. I pulled away and noticed her car didn't move. Obviously it was going to take her a while to shift from grooming-mode to driving-mode. She had to put the mascara-brush back in its bottle, tighten it up, move her grooming equipment, and start driving her car.

What do you think of this? Do you ever groom while driving?

(I was tempted to take the woman's picture but didn't 'cause I didn't want to embarrass her. The photo above is snagged off the Internet, which shows how common this activity must be for the 'net to have lots of pictures of it.)

  1. I do not like to be so late getting ready as to not even have time to put on my make up before leaving the house for work, etc. I have only done a touch up of lipstick while driving.

  2. I don't do this. i ,ake sure i give myself plenty of time to get ready before i leave. I think our society is so messed up, our cars are not an extension of the bathroom. I also think being a motorcyclist changes your perspective about being ready to move in a second, So much can happen in traffic, what if she was rearended and took her eye out with the mascara wand or eyelash curler? Good grief.

  3. I already have issues focusing on driving as it is. I devote as much attention as I can! Most I ever do while driving is grab a drink of my coke at a red light.

  4. I would never do that, I don't drive no, but I would never even do that as a passenger. I saw a teenage girl putting on a full face of make up on a moving train once. It was quite impressive how precise she was!

  6. This can be dangerous. Especially with mascara. I can be seen putting on lipstick...but nothing more than that unless I'm parked.

  7. Well I told you how I saw that woman shaving her face in the car the other day!!! I personally don't do makeup in the car if I'm driving. Maybe an occasional lip gloss, but not mascara! I'm not that coordinated!

  8. I do it when I'm not the one driving - but I leave mascara and eye liner for after I've arrived at my destination, and just sit in the car. I think it's too dangerous to do while at a red light! So many things can go wrong, and I still consider it distracted driving.

  9. Grooming in the car? NEVER! Shame on these dumb-ass bimbos (pardon my French), they should have their driver's licence revoked.

  10. I've done eye liner on the train but I don't like doing it, it is dangerous!!!x

  11. This is one of the reasons why I like getting public transport to work, I do my makeup on the bus/train so I can have extra time in bed. Couldn't do that if driving.

  12. Well she's doing it all wrong because you are supposed to curl the lashes first and then apply mascara! But I don't do either on most days and definitely don't do it while driving-or not driving-my car. Aside from dangerous it's rather tacky. I have been known to apply a swipe of lip balm while at the red light, but only if I am way back in the line of cars. xo

  13. I dont, I try to leave the house with make up on. The most I will do is re apply lipstick in the car.

  14. I do not even have a drivers liscene (here in Germany its not as important as in the US since there is public transportation everywhere) so I never did this. By the way, yes, the baby arrived and we are really really happy :)

  15. Nah!! I am an early morning girl so am well prepared ahead of time. I wouldn't do it in the car even if I wasn't. Better to pay attention to the road. All kinds of people out there alright! :(

  16. I'm all for multi-tasking and I've seen plenty of women do that (I've also seen both men and women getting changed at red lights - in their cars, I mean), but if I drove (which I do not), there's no way I'd risk causing an accident for the sake of vanity. I'm fine with the old adage that it takes pain to look beautiful, but I certainly don't want it to come from getting in an accident!

    Have an awesome Sunday, Ally!

  17. Aaahhh...I will shamefacedly admit that I used to do this when I worked my corp job. I was always running late (partly because I always run late, partly because I would've rather done anything than wake up and go to that godawful job every damn day), and sometimes it was my only hope. I finally reached a point where I didn't care if I even bothered at work anymore. I will put makeup on while on the way somewhere now if hubs is driving but not while I'm driving anymore unless I'm stopped at a light and it's just lipstick. And I know people who've gotten into trouble or accidents while texting - so, y'all, be careful out there!!!

  18. Oh, lucky me! I don't drive! But, yes, I do groom on the train.

  19. When I was a silly teenager, I'd apply full makeup in the car on my way to work or school. (We're talking concealer, powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss.) A few times, I even changed my shirt or pants while driving on the highway, thanks to cruise control. Now that I have a teensy bit of sense, the most I ever do is check/touch-up my lipstick at a red light.

  20. Loved this topic and reading all the comments and thoughts on it. I don't wear a lot of make up (mostly because I don't feel confident in applying it nicely), so it isn't something I do anyway, but it seems irresponsible to do if you are driving. I can see lipstick if you aren't the driver maybe, but putting things by your eyes when driving seems very odd. Then again, I don't live somewhere with traffic so maybe it is different with that?

  21. I can put on chapstick while driving but that's about it. BUT, if someone else is driving I can totally put on a full face of makeup, even mascara. It took me a long time to get to that point though.
