"Individuality is freedom lived."

                                                                         (John Dos Passos; American novelist)

We are all unique.  We are individuals with particular strengths, weaknesses and quirks.  I believe we should celebrate our unique qualities, not hide them.  They make us special.

Society pressures us to conform.  Group norms, by their design, squelch individual expression.  When social pressure inhibits us, we lose the chance to be our true selves.  That's a shame.

In my life, I try to express my true nature -- even when it deviates from common practice.  I face the fear of criticism by valuing my happiness above the opinions of strangers.

I encourage you to consider doing the same.  Whatever your passions, embrace them.  And dodge any cold water others try to throw on your dreams.  We only live once, so we should do it our way.

  5. Giggle! This post made me smile. I think a tutu with a suit is probably a genuine first. I adore it!

  7. So playful, particularly the second photo! I like the juxtaposition of the formal lines of the suit with the tutu's whimsical explosion of purple. The tie is a very nice touch - I just wore purple and gold together on my blog {stylish minds think alike?} ;)

  11. Gwah! You look adorable! Ugh, I seriously need to shove this into my loved one's brains. I really hate that people worry so much about what people think about them. It is okay to an extent (as in, I never want hurt someone's feelings), but if you like purple tutus, you like purple tutus! :D

  17. You are too cute! I was reading the text and could only see your top half while doing so. I should have known there'd be a little surprise underneath to be found when I scrolled down. :) You are one of a kind and such a fun spirit.
(Glad you were able to take a little needed break.)

  20. You are unendingly inspiring, wise, and flat out cool, dear Ally. This is one of my favourite outfit photos I've ever seen on any blog in all the years I've been online, because it is such a stellar, genuine way of conveying who you truly are.

  22. Aww! I love your tutu! Your suit is fab too. This subject has been on my mind a lot today. I find myself back in that rut of, "Don't post that, people may end up hating you." Or, "You better do that person that favor because you owe them for the mashed potatoes they bought you two years ago." It's stifling. And my psyche is just screwed up from it right now. I went through a lot of (self) cognitive therapy to overcome this kind of thinking and now I'm right back to it again. You're right. I only have one life to live. Might as well be who I'm going to be, and do what I want to do.
