By The Pros

I've seen color-blocking done by bloggers with separate pieces of clothing; I've seen color-blocking done by clothes-designers with a single item (e.g., multi-colored dress).  But I've never seen color-blocking done by constrasting outer-clothes and deliberately-revealed underwear.  Until now...

The picture is from the professional photoshoot in GQ magazine of popular new actress, Kat Dennings, who is the alt-rebel half of the "2 Broke Girls" cast.

What do you think of the look?  What do you think of her?  Have you seen the TV show?

A more interesting question to me is -- how often do you deliberately show your underwear?!

  1. I don't know about the color blocking but.. holy moly, her boobs are mesmerizing!

  2. This look is nice for an actress photo shoot, but not for real life people like us. Well...unless you are a hooker who likes colorblocking, lol!

  3. I've heard of her (anyone named Kat grabs my attention for obvious reasons!), but I haven't seen her in any films or anything. Not too sure about color-blocking with undergarments, though.

  4. I've seen her around for years, and I like her! I am not one for showing undergarments in daily life. My daughter and her friends often choose bras with cute straps for wear with spaghetti strap tanks just in case they show a bit, but showing the cups is just trashy imo.

I could care less about her bra but I would LOVE to get her eyelashes!!!!

  5. I knew underwear as outerwear had sort of come back as a fringe trend, but I don't see myself doing it anytime soon. I've just gotten to the point where I'll wear a black bra under a white shirt!

  6. Mhm, this one's difficult. I don't generally object to wearing *some* underwear items as outerwear, in fact I find it quite stylish and creative: Vintage slips as dresses, vintage girdles as miniskirts, corsets on the outside, or just lacey, lingerie-"inspired" items... but just exposing more *actual* underwear than bra straps under spaghetti strap tops, and in particular that picture with the half-exposed bra, feels gut-reaction-weirded-out-*wrong* to me.

Maybe the reason is that those items I listed are all underwear of times past, and the average person doesn't wear them as underwear today, so their use is clearly marked as non-accidental and not-primarily-for-sexualization-purposes-but-for-personal-expression. Whereas her styling for that picture seems to be purposefully sexualized for a hypothetical viewer exercising the infamous male gaze... well, it's GQ, so that is to be expected.

In any case, I went and read the article, and she seems to be a really cool person! I frequently describe myself as "weird" (with positive connotations, and certainly applicable to the fact that I take a colorblocking picture and subject it to a feminist analysis!) so this really resonated with me :)

  7. Eek! It's called UNDERwear for a reason. I never let my bra straps or thong show. I want to be taken seriously.

  8. I don't let my underwear show at all - I don't like how it looks!

  9. I really like Kat Dennings and Terry Richardson(who was the photographer). And I think it looks great! But it's not something for everyday life.
The only thing that you can see almost always are my brastraps and I don't care about it.

  10. Eh, I'm not a fan of exposed underwear... but I do keep wishing to find a solid bustier type thing (a la Madonna?)to wear this summer or possibly under cardigans.

I think sometimes the lingerie look can be hit or miss.. but I believe people have the right to be sexy if that's what they want.

That said, I don't know who she is or what show she's on. So my opinion is totally based on personal preference.

  11. Nope, no underwear showing. I like the show she is in. She is sassy and funny in it. She is very well endowed!

  12. Wow. This girl n pic is hot. I like this take on colour blocking, but it kind of reminds me of something I did when I was a teen.

  13. I love the show ... but NO underwear showing for me ... though she looks HOT! :)

  14. While this photo is really intriguing, I can't think of a practical place to wear something like this.

  15. I concur with Poet's thoughts on vintage underthings showing, but I don't like my actual underwear showing at all (although a bit of strap is okay if it's a pretty one).

  16. I agree with Poet on that! She couldn't express my thoughts more accurately. Nothing wrong with the girl, but it's a picture made for men magazines only!

  17. I haven't seen the show just the previews...
I don't show my underwear. I try to keep it "under".

  18. I just love Kat Dennings. This is super sexy for her from what I've typically seen, but in Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist I just...I love her. Her character is so endearing. She's self conscious the way all high school kids are, but also confident and tough. Plus her blog is HI-LARIOUUUSSSSS

  19. Oh no! I never show any part of my underwear! Though Carrie Bradshaw would say differently! ;) I love Kat Dennings as an actress, but I am so not down for this look - I guess it appeals to a certain market, though!
