Two Movie Recommendations

The first one just came out and the second one is a year old.

"Crazy, Stupid, Love" is the new flick.  It's much better than I expected.  The writing is sharp and the acting is excellent.  The cast is superb -- Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore and Marisa Tomei.

The second movie was trashed by the critics last year but unfairly.  They were looking for art while the movies aims to be merely entertaining.  There is nothing wrong with entertainment.  For a century, most movies have tried just to amuse their audience.

"The Tourist," with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, has the elements of an old-time thriller.  A mystery, a beautiful woman, a handsome man, a twist in the plot and gorgeous travel backdrops.

I wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised.  Plus -- and this may sound odd -- I loved Angelina's makeup in the movie.  Every shot lingered on her face and pros had spent hours making her look good.  I found her appearance mesmerizing.

Have you seen anything good lately?

  1. That is funny because my dad rented The Tourist and really liked it. He did say it wasn't anything special, but he just liked the acting and the plot enough that he thought it was a great film :)

I have crush on Steve Carell. I wanna see this movie! I have a stack of movies to get though still and Amazon just informed me that Sabrina was on sale for $5. I love movies.

  2. I'm not surprised that Crazy, Stupid, Love is good. They have a great cast - I am a HUGE fan of Ryan Gosling (and his abs) and Julianne Moore. They're both pert near perfect in my book. And I think it's the same director as Easy A which I thought was a very smart film.

I'm happy to hear your recommendation for the Tourist though - it got panned, but yes, sometimes you just want to be entertained and it sounds like this film delivers that. I'll have to watch it.

Unfortunately, the last film I saw was Transformers 3. Fortunately, I saw it with my nephews who loved it, so I was happy to be there with them.

  3. I've wanted to see both of those. I haven't been watching many movies lately. The latest was the last Harry Potter, which was brilliant.

Maybe I have low expectations for movies, but I tend to love things that most people find mediocre. But then again, I am currently watching the 1981 BBC version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tv series. Heh.

  5. Lars and the Real girl was a good flick....it wasn't something that was a Hollywood hit but I believe Ryan Gosseling is in it.

I am sick and home tomorrow...this may be one of those on demand movies I watch! thanks for the recommendation....looking forward to seeing if I agree with you and Angelina's makeup : )

  7. I've been watching many movies lately (and all my life actually...). My most recent suggestions are: "500 days of Summer", "REC" and "REC 2" if you need a good dose of terror, "The way back", "Witness for the Prosecution" (1957), "Exam" and "Devil". I'm also watching season 3 of "Lie to me". I have no idea if it was successful in America, but I just love Tim Roth!! Kisses :)

  9. We just watched The Fighter, I though I wouldn't like it, but the acting was very good. Christian Bale hit it outta the park. Plus it had lost of Boston shots, and that make me happy, being from around there and all. The second one I've seen recently was Fair Game, I really liked that one, but I suspect it would depend what side of the fence your politics fall on :) I try to never ever talk politics with people that I like. It can get ugly fast, and life is simply too short for any ugly.

  10. So, we just got 'Tourist' in the mail from netflix last night. My hubby didn't have enough time before his work call to watch it so we are saving it. May be tonight.
I will have to add the other movie to my netflix que. We rarely get out to the movies but I add them as soon as the previews come out and eventually a year or so later they come to us. :)

  12. Crazy Stupid Love looks like it will be good, glad you are giving it a thumbs up.
The Angelina movie was basically a photo shoot of her and I had to trash anything with Johnny Depp in it.

  14. I am super excited about Crazy Stupid Love. I love that whole cast. Glad to hear your review on that.

I love love love Johnny Depp. He's been on my "list" since 21 Jump Street. But I didn't see this film. Should I? It just seemed so unwatchable. But I trust your opinion and I will add it to my Depp watching.

We saw Limitless with Bradley Cooper. LOVED it.

  17. I really want to see Crazy, Stupid, Love. I LOVE Steve Carrel and Ryan Gossling. And I still never got around to seeing The Tourist! But I think I saw it on TV this week, so i'm sure it will be on again. I have this magical power where when I want to see a movie, it randomly appears on television haha.

  18. I will have to see the first one for my dahling Emma. I don't like Ryan Gosling though. Just something about him in the looks department. I'm sure he's a very nice fellow, but you know. I'm pretty sure I should play her love interest, not him.

How excited are you for "The Help"?!?!?! I just heard about it last week and am ecstatic. I hope it's good.

  26. I just saw "Captain America"... LOVED IT! Especially how awkwardly he moved right after he was changed... like he didn't know how to use his new body.

    "Limitless" was pretty entertaining too.
