Spicy Felafel Pocket

I stop at Starbucks as reward for walking a mile and enjoy several of their offerin. Like the "Americano" (espresso and hot water) and "Impossible Breakfast Sandwich." Eager to expand my favorites I leapt at a chance to try two new options, one a sandwich (good!), the other a drink (not for me).

The "Spicy Felafel Pocket" is tasty with nice flavor and medium heat. My only complaint is its small size. I need two of them to be sated. The sandwich is described as "vegan-friendly" which means it waves at vegetarians when they walk by. :)

The new drink is "Cortado." It's espresso (50%) and steamed milk (dairy/oat) (50%). Despite being served in a small cup (8 oz.) the Cortado packs a powerful punch of caffeine: it contains THREE shots of espresso. (My Americano has only one shot.) After drinking the deceptively potent Cortado my heart raced all day like a rabbit on speed.

As we bikers say, YMMV (your mileage may vary).

  1. I liked the falafel pocket (including the small size) but the coriander/cilantro taste was just too pronounced for me. Pity because it would have been my new weekly treat. (There's a Starbucks between my work and work bank so i walk right by every Wednesday).

I'd love to try the cortado - but I had a similar racing effect from the shaken espresso so I stick to the cold Brew even when it's 20 degrees outside.

    1. I understand. We all have our preferences. I choose to drink hot drinks (tea/coffee) even on hot days in Summer so I get your cold brew choice.

  2. It's nearly lunch time for me, so that spicy falafel pocket is making me hungry! Your remark about the vegan friendly sandwich waving at vegetarians walking by made me laugh out loud :-)) xxx

  4. Starbucks sells food? I guess you can tell how much I go there (never).

    1. They've always sold some food but until recently it wasn't worth eating. Now they're trying to improve their offerings. I wouldn't endorse most of their dishes but a few (like these pockets and the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich) are worthwhile.

I don't know how popular Starbucks is in your area but -- and this is true -- there are FIVE of them within walking distance of my house. They're more prevalent than squirrels here.

  5. I have to be very careful with espresso drinks. My heart doesn't race but when I come down, I come down hard lol Haven't seen/tried the felafel yet. I don't tend to get food there though.

    1. I agree and am very picky with Starbuck's food which is largely awful. The Impossible Breakfast Sandwich is an exception that lured me in. The Spicy Felafel Pocket is a second option.

  6. Vegan-friendly - baaaaahaaaaa!!!!
I'm not a fan of Starbucks as they were notorious for not paying their taxes in the UK (loopholes) and putting smaller independent businesses out of business plus the disposable cup thing so I never really know what they do. I'm not really a falafel fan and I can't tell you what it is I don't like about it as on paper, it is a lot of things I enjoy. Weird!
Well done for your walking!! You deserved it!

    1. Thanks, Kezzie. I grasp each of your points. One thing I should add about this felafel sandwich is that it does not taste like felafel. Obviously it contains ground chickpeas but seasonings change the flavor to something completely different. Someone who doesn't like felafel might actually like this pocket.

  7. That looks tasty, thank you for the report! I hear you on the caffeine - I think I might have a heart attack if I tried the Cortado, LOL. I really really wish Starbucks would bring back the Cherry Mocha, it was so good.
