Childhood

Sixty years ago I took pleasure in small things. Like I enjoyed wearing this winter coat and hat for their warm comfort. I was unaware of how unstylish they looked.

Childhood can be a happy time and fortunately it was for me.

  2. Childhood was a happy time for me as well, even if I often wore unflattering clothes as well. This was courtesy of my paternal grandmother who insisted on sewing all my dress but only knew one basic model which she used over and over again. I remember being envious of people who wore shop-bought clothes :-) xxx

    1. What a poignant point. Yes, as children we're aware of ways in which our families differ from those of our classmates so a story like this makes sense. To adult eyes, however, we understand the effect of resources and other forces that operated on our parents and grandparents. Thank you for sharing, buddy.

  3. I do think you look cute! And I see a bit of Sherlock Holmes in there so not totally unstylish! I always knew we didn't have much money as children as mum was always making us aware of it so we understood. Made it hard but we still had a very happy childhood even if hungry.x

    1. Quite true, Watson! :) What children really want and need is love. Attention, affection and love.

  4. Style wasn't a concept that applied to children - this is how children's clothing looked, and our parents bought things anticipating they would last a long time (and we would wear them). I wore a lot of hand-me-downs - very NOT stylish early 70s stuff in the early 80s - I was only vaguely aware that I didn't dress like others.

  5. Ah childhood. Youth truly is wasted on the young.

  6. I think you look very stylish. When I grew up, I lived in leotards or costumes whenever allowed when I was small. When dressed properly, usually in hideously scratchy dresses, I wanted to scream. I remember I practically lived in a Dalmation onesie (101 themed) paired with purple mardi gras beads. Thankfully my parents indulged my brother and I in our fashion escapades. I have a lovely picture of him in an oversized purple muscle tank with teal and hot pink leggings (very early 90s)

  7. Aw, great photo! I also had a nice childhood, which I'm very grateful for (although it does make me miss my childhood home all the more.)
