The 1,864 islands in the region I just visited vary in size from big (40 square miles) to small. To count as an island a place has to be above sea-level all year round and have at least one living tree on it.
Most of the islands I saw have only one or two homes on them. I laughed at one called "Just Room Enough Island" which is true to its name; it's only 3,300 square feet and amazingly has a full-sized house on it. The owner says "One misstep and you're swimming."
Would you live there?!
Two words, Global Warming :-)
ReplyDeleteThat tree doesn’t look well. If it dies does it lose island status? What is below an island?

Good comment and questions.
DeleteI don't know how to swim, so there is no way I would live in a place surrounded by water.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post Ally, I didn't know that fact about islands.
ReplyDeleteI imagine it would be a bit of a nightmare having fridges, ovens and large items of furniture delivered to a home on 'Just Room Enough Island'.
Yup. There's not even enough room for a helipad!
DeleteI also wonder about the infrastructure: how do they deal with sewage? where does their fresh water come from? It's cool, but I'd like to be a bit more sheltered - on a stormy day, the water would be lapping at the front door!
ReplyDeleteI learned that island homes get electricity through a system of underwater pipes. Sewage goes into a "holding tank" that needs to be pumped out when full. I assume fresh water needs to be carried in but some parts of the River are fresh water and clean enough to drink.
DeleteNoooooooo I would not lol Or I would at least sleep in a boat bed ha!

No way! I'd be too scared of flooding!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this place existed- how fun and just right- or just room enough, rather. I would be scared with rising sea levels and tides if it would ever swallow up the house, but I this it's so cute!
ReplyDeleteHope to see you over on my new post! Florals and sneakers for the win.

We live not too far from The Thousand Islands as I'm sure you know. We've never taken a tour though. Looks interesting. There is no way I'd live on that one house island. It's like a nightmare.

Yes, all you have to do is swim across Lake Ontario. :)
DeleteI'd hate to see what their flood insurance costs. lololol! Not for me. I prefer more inland.
