It’s an entertaining, educational walk through history using time as its prism. The book examines how the concept and recording of time (with, e.g., clocks) changed societies, built empires, enabled commerce, spread religion and deeply affected our lives. I recommend it highly.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, this does sound interesting! I read a children's book about the history of timekeeping which I loved so I would be intrigued to read it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Another onto my book wishlist!
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting read, Ally, and totally my cup of tea! xxx
ReplyDeleteSounds like the author got started on a wikipedia hole and ended up writing a book!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a very cool read.
Even better -- he has a lifetime of learning and direct experience. He's travelled around the world visiting places of horological importance, seeing and learning about them first-hand. For example, visiting a site of a famous terrorist bombing a century ago, he was able to determine the terrorist's target by observing the area. (The bomb exploded prematurely.)
DeleteStellar sounding book, Ally. This is my kind of reading to a tee.
ReplyDeleteAn author who covers somewhat similar topics - doing so a beautifully eloquent manner - is Canadian Christopher Dewdney. In particular, I cannot recommend his title "Acquainted With The Night" highly enough. It ranks amongst my all-time favouite reads.
