Governors Island

The best place in New York City is still relatively unknown -- Governors Island.

After decades of being off-limits (for use by the Coast Guard), Governors Island is now a big public park with beautiful scenery, historic buildings, amazing views and areas for art exhibitions. Word hasn't spread yet so the Island is vastly under-utilized. You get there by a short ferry ride from southern Manhattan or Brooklyn.

The Island closes during the Winter. This week it's opening for Summer with a whole bunch of art exhibits and performances. I'm heading there today. Ferry rides are free this week!

Here are some pics from my last visit.

  1. I have always thought of concrete and tall buildings when I think of New York. It was fun seeing your pictures showing different from my stereotypical thoughts!

    1. That's the amazing thing about GI -- you're so close to the urban jungle and yet in the midst of bucolic nature.

  2. I belong to a meetup photography group called Cityscape Photo NYC. They are hosting a photo event in Governors Island in June. I am still debating if I want to participate or not.

    1. It's a BEAUTIFUL place to take pictures, but you don't have to do that in a group. I recommend going by yourself (or with family) to enjoy the Island in addition to doing photography.

  3. I am following this blog backwards so I was able to see the pictures of the art first. But this is a beautiful place to be. When I was there decades ago I believe it was closed off to coast guard. I am not quite sure how I got in?? Please don’t hold that against me. LOL.

    1. I was wondering that myself. :) You might be confusing Governors Island with Roosevelt Island or Randall Island.
