In The Red

It's been a long time since I've done an outfit-post. At least it feels that way. Conceiving an outfit, putting it together, donning and photographing clothes are joyful experiences for me. They create a peaceful serenity. They're also fun. So today I carved time out of a busy day to restore balance to my psyche.

Since I've been away for a while, I made an extra effort to impress you. What's more impressive than the boldest of colors -- fire-engine red? That's the hue of a new dress I picked up thrifting yesterday; it cost only $12. Plus, I love its attitude -- mature yet playful. Like me.

What do you think?  Too bold or just enough?

    2. I have worn this style several times over the years, it makes you feel sassy and sexy. I love how you see a peak of shoulder, beautiful frame for face and neck and what it does for the decolletage! Beautiful without being slutty.

  8. Red is always bold (not 'too much', or 'too little' there, just bold) so wear it with the attitude to match and you'll be fine.

  9. This is a great colour and style on you. The portrait neckline is super-flattering, age appropriate and helps balance your wider shoulders. The peplum fills out your narrower hips and makes your waist look tiny! Fabulous! I expect to see you in this next time we meet up! ;-P

    1. I look to you, Sheila, to explain to me why the Sun shines. Your expert analysis is perfect and I never could have done it myself.

    2. Aw, thanks, sweetie. :) None of us has "perfect" bodies, so we need our clothes to work on our behalf. If we know what we want our shape to look like (usually we aim for the hourglass), we can then find clothes to help achieve that.

For tops, you should look for V necks and U necks, but not a boatneck (they go straight from shoulder to shoulder, and make wide shoulders look wider). For skirts, a fitted waist plus any fullness from there will give you the illusion of hips. You also have killer legs, so a pencil skirt will also look great on you (but then you'll want a blousier top to balance your top half).

It's all about experimentation - we keep on learning that way!

      Hugs,
      She

  10. That is my favorite of all necklines. :D What a great find; you're fantastic in it and it looks like a great fit! Aren't dresses that are mature and and unapologetically feminine grand?

    1. PS I can't wait until I find me something like this. I also have broad shoulders and narrow hips, and I agree with Sheila that this cut is awesome to show them to perfection.

    2. Yes, they are! I just never thought I'd find one for myself. Sheila's analysis is spot-on. This dress adjusts the shape of my body to a magical degree.

  11. You must be so much fun to thrift-shop with - you find the most gorgeous things! That red is beautiful on you, and the choice of necklace is great - it accentuates without competing with the pretty neckline.

    1. That was my goal for the necklace -- to fill up a lot of empty space without calling too much attention to itself 'cause the neckline is the star here. Thanks for reporting I succeeded. And I hope I'm fun to thrift with but, sadly, I'm almost always alone. I wish I had girlfriends who'd go shopping with me. Then we could have tea and chat about our favorite TV shows.

  23. Red is one of my favorite colors. You nailed this and you're so on trend with the off the shoulder look. Everybody on the Internets keeps telling me that off the shoulder is where it's at. Now, I see proof.
