The Animal World

I saw a bunch of creatures today, including butterflies. Did you know a butterfly has a long tube extending from its mouth which it uses to suck food in? It's called a proboscis and is similar to an elephant's trunk. I also learned that there are male and female butterflies but you can't tell the difference with a human eye. You need to check their ultraviolet reflectivity with a machine.

  5. That goat looks like it's singing a song :)

Here in the UK we have a big campaign going on at the moment run by one of the wildlife charities - 30 Days Wild - trying to encourage us to do something in nature every day in June. It's really important for us to notice the natural world, and learn about it.

  11. These pictures are really pretty! Now that we have a child, I think I should learn the names off all the butterflies out there so that I teach my daughter :)

  13. My boyfriend and I went out to the Sacramento Zoo yesterday, so I have some animal photos too! Not too many, though, because I was so absorbed in just looking at the birds and giraffes, and because we brought a camera with a fixed lens (lighter than the bulky DSLR) so zooming wasn't possible.

Also, that's one hell of a goat.

  14. Really lovely photos, Ally - the owl's expression is priceless. I could see that as the basis for a meme or transformed into a graphic on a cool hipster style tee.

Thank you for sharing these great shots with us.

  15. What a beautiful set of pictures… I love monarchs but my favourite butterfly is the morph. The blue colour can only be seen on its outer wings when it flies but not when it is poised, so its a very difficult one to photograph.
