Schoolgirl Ally

I wasn't a schoolgirl growing up, but I desperately wished I were.  I envied the girls who got to wear pretty skirts and clothes.  I wanted to join them as they huddled and giggled.

My childhood has passed, but the opportunity to wear a schoolgirl outfit hasn't.  Without looking for one, I saw this cute plaid skirt for pennies at a thrift-store.  At the same time, I noticed some heels that add a little sass to the outfit.  For less than $10, I got to play out a lifelong dream.

Have you ever worn anything like this?

  1. Good to see you're having fun with this archetype!

I went to city public school, so nothing like that for me... although my mom did make me wear my Girl Scout uniform every week. I had the little crossover snap tie and the sock fringe, sash and all!

  2. Love that skirt! I was a school girl from pre-k all the way through high school and then I was so used to it, that I still wore skirts in college! Hahaha!

  3. Such a cute little skirt ... Glad you could experience your fantasy!!!

Our school uniform was a green tunic in winter and a green and white plaid design dress in summer ~ which was seriously unflattering. I always envied the girls who got to wear skirts to school and of course we were always in envy of the kids in America who got to wear civvies to school!!! LOL!!!!

  4. "Your skirt is too short Miss Ally. Please ensure it is only one inch above the knee!".
    :-)

I wore very sensible knee length kilts for school as ours werent allowed to be too short! Hence the above comment!you look very cute like this but what about putting your hair in bunches??? X

  5. I wore these types of skirts OFTEN....In the 60's, we rolled them up at the waist, secured the roll with a belt, and put a sweater on to hide the fact. Sometimes I'd leave the house wearing a "respectable" length, then dash to the girls' room to do my alterations....rolling it back down before I walked in the door when I got back home! tee-hee

  6. Ha ha! I have...but it was in the privacy of our bedroom and only for my husband! I did a bit more a Brittany tribute with pigtails and all. It was quite a hit!

    ; )

Somewhere I've heard this length of skirt referred to as a waist ruffle.

  7. You're soooo "Oh, Baby Baby" and cute in this schoolgirl outfit. I like the beachy wave hairdo too.

  8. Very fun outfit!!! I remember desperately wishing I went to a school with uniforms as a child (especially between the 4th and 6th grades). I yearned for the sort of upper crust appearance I thought they'd give me probably one of the only kids ever who was irked that they got to wear whatever they pleased (within school dress code guidelines) to class everyday.

Looking back, though part of me still things I would have adored wearing uniforms, ultimately, as a free spirited lass, I am glad that I got to sport my own styles to school, especially when I got into those all important teen years when one finds a lot of their voice through their wardrobe choices.

    1. You're right. Freedom is better than limits. But ironically I wanted to be free to dress in a girl's uniform and that choice was not allowed for boys.

  9. If ONLY the one private school I went to had such cute uniforms. Nope, we wore khakis (which I loooathed) and polos. Which I loathed even more. Because polos in the early oughts came in two styles - Abercrombie ($49 a polo) or Walmart ($7) a polo.

Of course I was still in that awkward neither women nor kids size, finding clothing was more impossible than anything.

After a year, I found out we WERE allowed to wear black or navy pants and I proceeded to wear black pants, a black or white polo (I had one orange one that I wore to pieces), and a black zippy jacket for the next two years.

I was teased something awful because I wore dark clothes and dark hair. Which, I have now embraced my dark side - I don't mind being called Goth anymore.

  10. The plaid mini skirt was a common part of my wardrobe in high school. If a skirt was too short for the dress code I would layer it over jeans. I started a trend!

  11. Too fun!! I had a plaid wool skirt I wore for a bit that reminded me of a school uniform. Someone even stopped me in the restroom at work when I had it on one day and said "I wore something just like that when I was in school years ago!"

  12. when i was in school, we had a strict dress code (that i'd always break, unintentionally, and find myself kneeling in the principal's office measuring my skirt length!) and i often wished we had uniforms. of course, now they do...but i never got a chance to wear one! glad you did!

  13. It's so funny, when I was leaving the house this morning in a sweater, a pleated leather skirt and ballet flats my boyfriend said "Where are you going, school?!"

It's never too late to dress like a school girl! Especially if you have amazing legs... and you do.

  14. Like you, I dreamt of wearing a school girl uniform. All my friends went to schools that required a uniform: the plaid skirt, white button down, tall white socks… however my school wore regular clothes :(
