Brooklyn

It was beautiful in New York today.  Sunny and 60-degrees.  As pleasant as Summer.

Taking advantage of the unseasonal warmth, I hopped on my motorcycle and rode into Brooklyn.  I visited Williamsburg, the new Capital of Cool, where I walked around and absorbed its pervasive hipness.  While there, I made pilgrimage to the best record-store in America (Rough Trade).  I picked up the musical oeuvre of "The Killer," Jerry Lee Lewis, who was known as "rock & roll's first great wild man."

Jerry Lee Lewis's music, created at the time of my birth (1956-1964), includes numerous classics like "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," "Great Balls of Fire," and "Breathless."  His songs were released as singles by Sun Records, a legendary recording studio in Memphis at which I had a mystical experience five years ago.

Here are some pics of my day.  What did you do today?

  1. When I was in grade school, some of the girls in the neighborhood gathered in a family cellar and created our own version of the Mickey Mouse Club..complete with roll call! The mothers were invited to attend our "performance" where I tap danced to an ENDLESS rendition of "Great Balls of Fire"...with a "Whole Lotta Improvising Going On" This morning I went to church...this afternoon, I've been sitting here at the laptop checking up on my friends and blogs. Wish I could figure out a way to show you the grey, rainy, foggy Wisconsin afternoon that I'm enjoying (and of course my "church outfit")...

    1. What a lovely memory. When my friend Maura was a small child, she was hooked on the Mickey Mouse Club and she used to kiss the television screen when Annette Funicello came on. I'd love to see your outfit!

    2. All I remember is it was some sort of short sleeved sweater (no doubt a hand me down from a cousin or friend of the family as ALL of my clothes were), and when I shook my "jazz hands" the sleeves moved a lot...and I HATED it. I did NOT, and still do not, like anything the least bit girlie...ruffles, polka dots and such. LOL!

  7. Glad you enjoyed some nice weather! We had warmer weather this weekend too but it was accompanied by fog so we pretty much stayed indoors.

  9. These pictures are truly gorgeous. New York has been the subject of so much street photography, it amazes me it can be captured so freshly. :)

  10. Wait---mystical experience? Do tell!

I love Sun Records because they put out Johnny Cash records and I have been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid---my dad used to play him a lot and I ended up seeing several of his live shows in the 90s.

  13. I adore Jerry Lee Lewis music. My parents had old records of his when I was a kid and I listened to them and made up dance shows with my sister to them.

Looks like a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.

  15. Life has been chaotic, it's crazy that we are almost up to next weekend. We got away and stayed in a hotel built in 1855. It felt like it. Pics to come soon :). Editing takes a long time lol
