Ally-ology

Centuries from now, cultural historians will look back on our era.  With any luck, remnants of our time will include a snapshot of the Internet in 2014.  Among the findings historians will review is the content of my blog.

The scholars engaged in such pursuit will be called Ally-ologists.  Despite what you might expect, there will be serious debate among them on the social role and status of Ally.  Some will believe, and have evidence to support, that Ally was a prominent female fashion-blogger with many followers.  Others will assert the contrary -- that Ally was a washed-up, old male lawyer who didn't have the sense to keep his odd hobby private.

This post in particular is the subject of much debate among Ally-ologists.  Proponents of the former position contend that here Ally is appropriating the fashion of the young, an artistic maneuver celebrated for most of human history.  Advocates of the latter position say that Ally is merely deluded, unaware or unwilling to accept society's dictates on age-appropriate dress.

What's your opinion?

  1. I would like to start by saying that I love Ally's t-shirt and Ally is lucky I don't live closer because I would be raiding the heck out of Ally's closet.

Let me next say that while I do think that there are certain styles that for me feel inappropriate at my age, it's very personal. American style is not as homogenous as it was in the past when most people wore the same silhouettes and the same things were popular for most of America. I think that now you can wear whatever you want as long as you're comfortable. Or, even uncomfortable if that's your thing.

  5. Ally-ologists will certainly get a lesson in accepting all of people-kind!!!! Age appropriate dressing is such an anomaly today ... even on my side of the "pond" there are young and old who dress alike ... Comfort both in body and spirit is what I think counts ~ Carry on educating us!!!!!

  7. Very fun post! :) You know, I swear I've wondered too what distant generations (or perhaps visitors from another world) will think when they look back at these still very formative years of human history, filled with the web and the daily minutia of millions (billions?) of lives plastered all of it. How will things have changed (or not) by then? Only time (or a time machine) will tell.

  8. Age appropriate dress...that is such an interesting phrase. Who decides at what age each of us is no longer entitled to wear a certain item? The Fashion Police? It is time to rail against the machine. Your outfit does this very well.

  9. I will say that Ally is awesome and I think this outfit is fun - sometimes having fun is important. Who cares about age. You're only as old as you feel! <3

  10. I think that if I had Ally's legs, I'd be rocking the bandage skirts all damn day too. Plus, t-shirts with kittens in sunglasses are awesome. I remember when I was a teenager and like certain things. I still like a bunch of those style and just wear them a little different. It's all about feeling good and using the good sense we've acquired with our slightly longer lives!

  11. Don't we all decide what is and isn't appropriate for ourselves? At least that's the way I like to look at it. I'm sure others look at my 40 year old self and think differently, but as long as I'm happy, that's all that matter with fashion! Having said that, I will say that I love this outfit on you!

really like that outfit - all the black&white going on....
and whats about age? i could have grandkids already - you too - but should we wear beige nylon garb? i don´t wear miniskirts anymore, but more because it´s not my style. but i love to wear hotpants in summer, out of town. i don´t dye my white hair but i love to make fancy do´s with.
it´s personal. and this blog would be less colorful if you would not make fabulous fashion experiments :-)

  14. Squeee! You are one cool kitty ... darling outfit, right on the money and flattering! I've been mooning over graphic Ts ... can't find just the right one, but looks like this one is your alter ego, alright.
Ally is a style icon. Or should be! Enviable legs, this one ... and love the shoes with all. Beauty comes in all kinds of packages, and we can hope the ones ahead of us will remember our generations for that.

  15. This is one of my favorite outfits you've ever posted! I think years from now, cultural historians will look back and admire a person who didn't let society dictate her identity or sartorial choices :)

  16. Love this outfit! Such a cute shirt and it is perfect with the striped skirt and tights. You are allowed to wear whatever you want to in your own kitchen. ha You are not in the courtroom....so anything your little heart desires goes. In lawyer mode I admire Amal Clooney's style. Stylish and current...not dull or too serious.

  17. I really think that "age-appropriate" dress doesn't apply to transgenger ladies who do not "pass" as their true gender to the general public. Age-appropriateness is deeply rooted in conforming to the expectations and standards of society as a whole.

As you discuss in your post featuring Bruce Jenner, most MtF transgender ladies are unconvincing as female to the eyes of the general public. Therefore, their female gender presentation is already transgressive.

What's a little "age-inappropritesness" really going to add to the degree of transgression of society's standards of physical appearance?

    1. True. It's a misdemeanor on a long felony rap-sheet.

  18. I think the only thing that could keep Ally-ologists from appreciating her glowing love of life and fashion would be a cultural divide built over the time between now and then.
