The Birthday Season

I believe that when something is good, you milk it for all it's worth.

I love birthdays.  They're a great excuse to celebrate yourself.  Our existence is a mathematical improbability so we should jump with joy at simply being alive.  I appreciate that fact every day.

Plus, birthdays are good occasions to reflect on our lives.  Look back with sentiment, look forward with hope, and assess the present with as much clarity as we can muster.

I believe that birthday celebrations shouldn't be limited to one day, they should receive at least a week of celebration.  So, since my birthday is in one week (Nov. 3rd), I hereby officially open the festivities!

Do you like to celebrate your birthday?  Has your attitude toward it changed as you've gotten older?  (I'm older than dirt but I still enjoy the day.)

  1. Thanks for your lovely words on my last post!
I'm not good at celebrating my birthday and usually just make dinner for friends! Maybe I should change that next year...

    Have a great day,

  2. Birthdays just seem to be just another day anymore for me. Unless it falls on a weekend. Then it's party time! Is this your birthday month? If yes, Happy Birthday!

  4. Happy birthday in advance :D Is that you as a youngster in the pic :)?
Actually I'm not too fussy about my birthday, it is an awesome excuse to do something fun, but I like to celebrate when I'm on the mood.. :D Same goes for pondering about past, present, future & life in general - that happens when I feel like that should :D

    1. I'm a Scorpio and I fit the profile so perfectly. I didn't believe in astrology until I read about Scorpios and recognized myself.

  10. I love celebrating others' birthdays, yet I am ambivalent about mine. To me, I get a day older every day, so a birthday is just a convenient milestone to stop and reflect on an arbitrary unit of time passing. :D

Funny story, though: this year my father got my birthday confused with his dog's. I went to visit him and we took the dog out for fried chicken and frankfurters. I didn't tell him. (; (I am not upset by this, there's no question in my mind my father loves me very much, he's just a total character.)

  11. Dearest Ally, I should wish I could be there to celebrate with you!!!.

I found that we were just letting birthdays pass by and only celebrating the children and I decided it was no good - living in a country where life has become so cheap, I believe we need to celebrate each year we are here. So we have a get together and I must admit, I love it. I love it. I love it.

I must tell you as well that Lynn is the absolute best gift giver - she listens so well to people and remembers things you say you'd love to have. One year I said I wished I had a Lemon tree in my garden - she couldn't give me a lemon tree but painted me a table cloth with a lemon tree on it (it got lost in the chaos of the divorce and move) and many other times she's remember small things - that one sticks in my mind so clearly though.

As with all things in life, attitude is the make or break - I love yours.

Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah Mway birthday gal (one kiss for each day of your birth week and maybe an extra one or two) ... now just don't go putting candles on the cake cause no one I know enjoys eating candle wax :-)

  13. My attitude has changed over the years, but not whether to celebrate it or not, just the way I celebrate my birthday. I enjoy a more lowkey birthday these days, dinner with friends maybe a night out, and stretch it out through the week. :-)

  14. HAPPY early BIRTHDAY! I wished I lived closer so that I could celebrate a week with you! Have you ever watched Gilmore Girls? There was an episode where they celebrated a birthday for a whole week. I also think you might like that show, it showcases a lot of female introspect and independence, but is also very witty and funny at times.

  19. I'm right there alongside you, loving, embracing, and still getting almost as a giddy as I did when I was in grade school about birthdays. Sure, not all of them are bound to be gloriously awesome when we grow up (nor were all, at least in my case, worth writing home about when I was a kid), but the prospect that they may be, and that we can often help plan our own special day, makes me so fabulously happy and eager for July 10th (my b-day) to roll around each year.

Tons of joyful early birthday wishes to you, dear Ally!
    ♥ Jessica
