Gina's First Bath

I gave Ginalollabridgida her first bath today.

A real bath, not one of those showers she gets at commercial car-washes.  I took a bucket of hot soapy water and lovingly washed her soft curves and prominent features.  I got all the gunk of Winter off her and now she's gleaming in the sun.

Have you ever washed a car by hand?  Doing this was common when I was young; people didn't want to pay for something you could do yourself.  Now, however, it seems everyone goes to the car-wash where they pay to have mechanical brushes do a half-assed job.

There's a hidden benefit to washing your baby by hand.  You get to know her.  As you scrub her front, her back and her sides, you become personally familiar with her shape, the arc of her curves and the different materials she's made of.  It's a real, direct experience.  Intimate, even.  Okay, maybe I spent too much time rubbing her headlamps...

  4. I'm a bad car person. We use a machine wash... if we do at all. Between the pine pollen, bird poo, and bizarre weather, it's barely worth it. Plus our car is nearly 16 years old... we keep her engine nice though, so she keeps running for us.

  5. I am with you about hand washing your own cars. We wash all of our cars by hand and there is just something satisfying about doing it. Gina really is a pretty car, she deserves TLC by handwashing every now and then :) Heather

  6. I have not had my car washed in.. months.
I use to wash my car by hand, learned from watching my grandfather, he loved for his car to be super clean and would hand wash it every single weekend- and if anyone visited they probably got their car washed too.
I just loved remembering him doing that-

  7. I agree, you get a much better wash when you do it yourself. It's about taking pride in ownership.

  8. I love washing and polishing my bike and get quite a thrill looking after her myself. I wax her often and smile all the while because I know she is mine. Sometimes it's a little tedious particularly if it what I call 'nook and cranny' day because that means I am out the scrubbing the tiny spaces usually with a soft tooth brush. I lve looking at Scarlet gleaming in the sun. As for hand washing my Westfalia van, I leave that to my hub it's just too big, I am sure Miss Gina loved your gentle caress and is happy she sparkly clean.

  9. I dont remember the last time I washed the car .. both the bikes get a regular tub by hand though with the rain this week they are both looking a little neglected. It's definately a great way to up close and personal with your car or bike, I found all sorts of things that I didn't know about, like where to check the oil, while washing my bike in the first weeks I owned her.

Not to mention I can make sure she's happy :)

  12. Haha! Too much time rubbing her headlights! You're silly. I used to wash the family car when I was little. I think my parents were trying to put my boundless energy to good use.

  16. I used to wash my parents cars... I had no desire to get that personal with either of them. Too much workkkkkk (says the 14 yr old in me).

  17. Schatz washed my car this weekend - although I didn't help he enjoys it - you should see how he washed his bike!

I quite enjoy it once in a while myself.

  18. This has to be the funnest description of washing one's car I've ever read. I grew up washing the family mini van, but I've never felt inclined to wax poetically about those early days spent with turtle wax. I bet if I had a vintage car, I sure would now though! :)
