Today starts National Library Week. Sponsored by American Library Association, the week celebrates libraries for promoting literacy, education, and community. The theme this year is "Find Your Joy," encouraging patrons to explore resources and spaces offered by public libraries.
No place supports my growth as a person more than the local library. From childhood on, it has opened doors at no cost. I borrow books there, read dozens of magazines in their comfy lounges, bring home movies on DVD, and meet others sharing my interests (like a local photography group and a book club). Yay, libraries!
Libraries are the ultimate "data centers". It's always been a lifeline for me. I need to get back out there more often, but even if you can't get to your branch, library services have spread to apps and the internet too.
ReplyDeleteSome libraries now have everything from seeds, tools, bakeware, 3d printing, tickets to local museums and venues - some you can even 'check out' a person and be matched to listen to someone's story.
I definitely don't take enough advantage of my nearby branches. Nashville's main Library had a garage fire some months (a year?) Ago and only just reopened. The garage was one of the low cost ones downtown and suspicion is that it was targeted. The library itself has reopened but the garage has not. It was my after school hang out during high school
Yes! My library has seeds, free museum tickets (which I used this month) and Kindle e-books. They enable all of us, regardless of wealth, to access important information. Sorry to hear about the fire; I hope the re-opening was good.
DeleteIn honesty, it's been a while since the last visit to a library. That said, when our youngest wants to study somewhere quiet, that's his go to choice.
ReplyDeleteI had forgotten what a wonderfully quiet and gentle space the library was. As you point out, that's so much held within and that stillness certainly helps focus on a story or study.
I do love a library!!! I'm very much enjoyinh running my own music room library this year, the kids are really appreciative of the different and new books I have!
