Erlebnis, As The Germans Say

My stereo-receiver went bust a month ago. Uneager to replace it, I found an old-timey repair shop with a craftsman who fixed it at one-third the cost. Downside: the repair took a month. I've been suffering vinyl withdrawal for way too long.

Music matters! I'm crankin' some Grateful Dead right now to restore sanguine color to my cheeks. I wasn't a big Dead fan growing up but am giving their music a new listen since seeing an excellent multi-part documentary, Long Strange Trip (Amazon).

Forty years ago, when I was in college near Utica, I journeyed to Albany to see the Dead perform at a friend's college (RPI). The scene was wilder than the band. Deadheads back then were a travelling circus and you got high just being around them.

  1. It makes me so happy when I hear of people fixing things rather than chucking them away!

  2. You are lucky you found someone to repair it! Those guys are a very rare breed it seems now. Everyone would just rather throw it out and buy a new one. {sigh} I miss the good old days!

    1. Me, too. His store was in the bad part of town and run-down but full of stereo equipment getting repaired. It felt good giving him work.

  3. I miss putting a record on vs. clicking into my itunes. I listen to music on youtube as well but it's not the same as they will all of a sudden cue up some weird music. Good for you for getting the receiver repaired. Enjoy your music!

    1. Thanks! I love the physical movements of putting on a record and the indescribable sounds the needle makes when it comes in contact with the vinyl groove.

  4. We have an awesome high-end 80s turntable that a friend got us, and we are fortunate to have a great stereo equipment place near us. We don't listen to vinyl too much, but music is a huge part of our lives. We've already got tickets to another concert in the new year.

  5. That is so awesome! We have a very old record player in my living room. It belonged to my husband's grandfather. Whenever we come across old records, we scoop them. I can't recall the size but they're super thick. I don't mind the music. It's all jazzy type. I loved the era. And you can't get that sound out of a CD. LOVE. IT.
PS. I giggle at the old-timey...reminds me of Doctor Who.

  6. Aren't concerts just too fun- there's nothing like live music! Glad you were able to get your record player fixed!

    Happy Holidays, my friend!

  7. Glad to hear you found the old-timey repair shop. I'm lucky, as I have my own live-in repair man: Jos used to work at Philips, where did all manner of repair shops, including record players. We do have a lot of vinyl as well, and have inherited my Dad's jazz collection. I know people who'd be envious to hear you've seen the Dead perform all those years ago ... xxx

  9. I can not say anything bad about the Dead. For decades the travelling Dead-Heads would pop up wherever the band would play and you are correct, just getting near the Dead-Heads would get anyone high from the cloud of smoke that filled every concert hall. If you run into me in court you are just as likely to recognize me from my 'Jerry Garcia' ties than anything else.
I was much more of a Band Fan. Saw the modern version with Levon, Rick Garth etc. many times. My wife and I have been to hundreds of concerts. It is one of our favorite pastimes.

While we have seem most of the acts we would care about when they were around we have found some awesome cover bands.

  10. Well you know about my love for Phish which was a very similar following. The scene and the music are beautifully intertwined and it’s a wonderful community to be a part of. Very sad I ne we got to see Jerry live and that movie is on my list—thanks for the reminder! Ps—I went to SUNY Albany...good times :)
