Ally Homemaker

I often dream of being a homemaker. It'll probably never happen but the idea is one of my fondest fantasies.

On two recent visits to Rosie's Vintage, I found pieces that suit the role -- an authentic vintage dress from the 1950's and a new retro-style kitchen apron. I love the feel and look of the dress. It captures the domestic style of that bygone era.

Because the dress is sheer, I needed to purchase a black slip and found one at Kohls. I actually welcomed that opportunity because slips were regularly worn by women of my mother's generation and symbolize the femininity I aspire to. Today, slips are rarely used as most clothes don't require them. Do you have any slips?

I like this outfit. Is there anything you'd recommend to enhance the domestic look? The cute heels are from Torrid.

  1. I used to wear slips with all my dresses. I rarely wear a dress these days. Gonna have to change that because I love wearing dresses! But I digress. You look great in this dress. Perfect length for you! I absolutely love the apron too!

  2. I have tons of slips! I should do a post of all of them - I seriously have a drawer FULL. I love them - they are so comfy, and smoothing and very feminine. It's like I have a secret on under my clothes. I can totally see the allure for you, Ally! How wonderful that you have one! I love lounging in one in the summer - very "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

I would do a nice set of late 50s/early 60s jewelry with this look for the full June Cleaver - do an image search on "vintage thermoset jewelry" and you'll see what I mean.

Those shoes look adorable! I love this outfit, seriously. This is a great vibe for you.

  3. It's a cute outfit. As for the homemaker dream... this feminist daughter from a long line of strong independent women kind of shudders at the thought... but hey, it's a fantasy, so enjoy it.

    1. I understand that being a homemaker seems retro-grade to some ears but feminism is about allowing women to make all choices, including this one, and respecting their right to do so. Besides, my attraction to this differs due to a lifetime of being forcibly prevented from being female.

    2. I didn't want to offend you, or anyone, nor do I find it retro-grade. Of course women have the right to make choices that suit them, and it's not about career versus home, either. I think it takes a brave woman to put her financial future in the hands of someone else, that's all... the only lesson the women in my family wanted me to learn was that a woman should always be financially independent, whatever she ends up doing in life, so that she would be able to support herself and her children, if need be.

    3. No offense taken and I hope I didn't upset you with my response. I agree that everyone ought to be financially independent so nobody makes bad choices out of desperation. There are proposals in some countries to give everyone a guaranteed income -- which we can actually afford to do and which experiments have shown lead to greater social welfare. I support that idea.

  5. Love this Ally!

This is me most days, as I am a housewife, but I can't wear heels around the house as I don't want to tread on a bunny paw, as they are always under my feet!

As I type this I have an apron on, trimmed with lace, red lipstick and a bow in my hair. I know a lot of women wouldn't, for want of a better word, approve of my life choice, as I am very happily a homemaker, but it's my choice, I haven't been forced into it x

  6. I like the dress and apron. That huge knife in the bottom photo does have a Bates Motel vibe.
I also love my slips and they are hard to find so I will check out Kohl's when I get a chance.
I do not know how tolerant your wife is with your dressing but I eased my wife into being comfortable with me in a dress, hose, heels, wig and makeup by becoming her spare 'wife' doing the homemaker routine.
Many Sundays will find me in full femme mode cutting veggies, preparing stews or soups, or just putting together a dinner. I think my specialty is putting up a big sauce with meatballs and sausage but she likes my casseroles and my fish preparations often with roasted or sauteed veggies.
It has become tacitly accepted that when I get into cooking or cleaning mode it will be as a modern day version of June Cleaver.
It is a bit of a win/win situation.

    1. I understand your situation; you're making the best of it. I worried about the knife being scary but figured the rest of the outfit dispelled that.

  8. I also love the fashion of the 1950's housewife. So feminine.

I love the whole outfit. I'd wear all of it.

I'm especially fond of that apron.

I have slips because of my vintage collection and often they are required. I don't necessarily like wearing them because I find they can be quite hot, especially in summer.

  9. You look so pretty in your home maker persona Ally.
I have three slips and do wear them as many dresses from fast fashion stores skimp on fabric and the slips are required unless you are ok with the see through fabric.

  12. You look totally adorable Ally. My dream was also to be a home maker ... but here I am in the corporate world making believe I wanted a career!!! LOL!!!! Got 9 years left then I can be a housewife!

I do too have a couple of slips although I hardly ever wear dresses or skirts although I used to love them. I also love aprons ... the more frilly the apron the happier I would be.

  13. Love this outfit! And that is a wonderful apron. I've got a 1950s mint green Hoover vacuum that you'd look great pushing around the house---kind of like those fab housewife ads from that era. Too bad we don't live closer---I'd bring it over for your photo shoots :)

    1. I wish we could do that! I once wore a Halloween costume of Alice Kramden (from "The Honeymooners") and used a vacuum for a prop for this very idea.

  14. Love this kind of look on you! I actually do own a half slip even though I don't think I have a single dress. I just know how hard it is to find a slip when I need one! I grew up going to church in 'church' clothes so I am well familiar with slips.

  15. I wear slips only when I absolutely have to. I used to wear them all the time - I had a very old fashioned mom, but now I hate them so much because they stick to the back of my thighs when I stand up. Getting it unstuck in a subtle way is rather tricky.

I think I should dig in the same way - I look way too sporty and not girly at all at home
