Playing Around

Sometimes we want to look different.  Radically different.  So we play around.  I'm like a teenage girl and want to have fun exploring possibilities.

A few days ago, I tried to create a portrait -- but cancelled posting it because my makeup was off.  The colors were wrong.  It's tricky matching face-makeup to hot pink hair.  I re-did the portrait today and believe the result is better.

You probably can't tell but I went to the trouble of applying false eyelashes.  They're squirmy little devils.

Do you ever try radically new makeup and hair-color?

  1. This is actually my favorite look of yours so far! I like the cut of your wig and the bright lipstick.

Here are my tips on false eyelashes: First of all buy the glue that dries black. This helps blend in with your eyeliner. Secondly, use tweezers to hold the lashes instead of your fingers. Oh, also blow on the glue for a few seconds so it gets sticky instead of just wet. Then carefully place the outer corner first and then move inwards.

    Thanks doll,

    1. Good tips. I can see how each of them works better than what I'm doing. Thanks!

  2. How did you find lipstick that matches the pink hair so perfectly?
I thought I was going to shock the pants off our real estate agent yesterday (not that I want his pants off, that just makes house hunting that much more awkward!) by rocking a faux hawk. I was beyond disappointed when he didn't even bat an eye. It wasn't until this morning that I remembered his wife is a hair dresser, who has dyed her hair the colour of your wig. Nothing I can do with my hair one day will compare to the daring-ness of her hair every day!
Instead, I still take solace in knowing that a faux hawk will widen the eyes of my grandparents, deem me "odd" at work and make a good friend of mine unable to look me in the eye. A shocking look is always more shocking when people become accustomed to believing they know who you are!

    1. I went searching for just such a shade of lipstick and fortunately found it yesterday.

Sorry 'bout your failed shock attempt. Some are stunned by our extreme efforts; others, less so. I've always hung out with artistic types so it's hard to shock them. But it pushes me to try harder!

  3. I love your new eyeshadow style! I admire women who can rock more visible light colors like that- I lack the courage to try them. :D

Did you do your eyebrows? It feels like your portraiture and your makeup jumped a few levels overnight.

    1. Thanks. Yes, I did my brows. I put extra-effort into them this occasion.

My makeup skill is slowly improving. I've learned that to do it right takes time and doesn't always come out well. Often, when I'm doing an outfit-post where the clothes are the centerpiece, my makeup is perfunctory. In a portrait, however, the makeup is the focus so I worked hard at it: my first effort was a flop and my second attempt took an hour.

  4. I think that wig is way fun - cut and color! I've never done anything that radical, but I keep thinking about doing a pink streak.

    1. The great thing about wigs is convenience: you just pop 'em on and they aren't permanent. The perfect toy to play with.

    2. Oh, and for a "pink streak," there are pieces you can attach to your hair. Even that doesn't have to be permanent.

  5. You look lovely ! I want that necklace, it's gorgeous, and I have to confess I always wanted to try fake eyelashes but I am a coward when it comes to trying them, LOL. Hugs

    1. Thanks. I love the necklace and it is perfect for this portrait.

Women in their prime, like you, don't need falsies. When, however, we get older, our lashes thin out and can use the boost.

  6. I think your make up looks gorgeous! You know I am partial to a blue/teal eye (as that's my own signature color) and it looks wonderful on you with this pink hair. The false eyelashes are amazing! I have never in my life attempted to apply eyelashes. Wow, you did a great job.
The pretty crocheted top and baring of delicate neckline looks very soft and feminine.

  7. This is such a fun look! So bright and cheerful and exciting. :) That necklace matches perfectly. It's beautiful. And I'm envious you're able to pull off that shade of electric pink.

I'm terrible with makeup. I need more practice. Right now, I'm not brave enough to really play around much with color and whatnot. So I salute you. ;)

  9. Love the hair colour ~ hot pink sure suits you!!!

Funny ... while meandering through the rooftop market I saw a stall with wigs and went over to look at them while thinking about you ... there was a lilac wig and I thought ... Now Ally would look great in that!

I definitely saw the false eyelashes ... they look great. Have never tried them on myself and don't think I ever will.

  12. This is a totally awesome look. You'd have to wear it out to go party with the Meg[h]ans. Pink hair is the coolest! Your makeup skills are getting better than mine! You did a great job with the falsies! I can tell you're wearing them, but only because you mentioned it. They look really good!

  13. I must say I love this look! So radiant. If I didn't know you and I saw you on the street like this I would say hello.

I have never been succesful with fake eyelashes.

  14. I have dreamed of teal hair. Maybe I will just have to do it... screw my boss, who needs a job anyway!!! Hahahaha. I really never thought of a wig...hummm maybe. You look good in pink. (Alas I was not in new York this past week. I was in my kitchen canning salsa, teaching in the local elementary school special eduction classroom and picking up dog poop in the back yard. Oh the joys of being a grown up. Someone really should of told me before it was to late!)xoxoxoxxo

  15. I've always wanted to try dying my hair Christina Hendricks red and having color contacts!

Also, the pink hair suits you well. Reminds me of Jem and the Holograms! :)

  16. The ombre necklace is absolutely beautiful - perfect accessory choice for a vivid pink wig. It's super fun to veer drastically from one's normal look sometimes. Funnily enough, one might say, doing so for me usually means dressing in the way that most people see as "normal" (aka, modern).

  17. This is so cute - I love the pink hair and I think you got the makeup just right! The necklace is really fun too, I love the two toned look of it! I have tried some radically different makeup before and sometimes the result is ok and sometimes I'm like, oh man, what was I thinking? I have such fair skin I have to be careful.

  18. Oooh, false eyelashes are SUCH a pain, but sometimes they're worth it :) Love the look! Your lipstick and necklace pair well with your 'do.

  19. I can totally see the lashes !
and i can imagine that putting make up on with pink hair must be quite a challenge, which you pulled off quite well.
You have such nice skin Ally.

  20. I REALLY like this! It is nice to see you up close and your makeup and beads are a great match for the hot pink fun! I've never done the fake lashes, but I'd like to try one day. They make me so nervous though to try putting them on.

  21. Your make-up looks gorgeous Ally. You are rocking the bob. I, so, can totally see you in a *natural-hair-color-bob* (although I love the pink one on you) and the longer bangs suits you very well. You look young, cheerful, happy. Love how you did your brows and the falsies are great on you too. The necklace is awesome. Love it!!
    have a lovely day.

  22. YAY! I love this playing around. Top marks for getting the false eyelashes on. I've tried and failed, tried and failed. You are gorgeous. This boldness absolutely suits you. The eye shadow with the pink is the perfect counterpoint.

  23. False eyelashes are fiddly little buggers, you've stuck them on better than I did mine on new years eve

  24. When I costume, it's the only time I seem to put in the effort I see you wonderful fashion bloggers enjoying every day.

I'm going to be trying false eyelashes for the first time this Halloween... hopefully I won't freak out in a rage because meticulous, fiddly, uncooperative things drive me nuts! This Halloween's costume is going to be a bunch of make-up firsts for me... primer, foundation, contour shading, fake eyelashes, eyelash curler... crossing my fingers. I also tried eyeliner and mascara for the first time this year for some of my Rockabilly outfits. I never realized make-up was an art form. I'm sort of thankful I was introduced to it through my costuming desires. I still don't wear it on an everyday basis. For me, it's just a thing for playing dress-up (probably is a waste that I immediately scrub it off my face when I'm done a 'photo shoot'.)

I like that lipstick matches the hair and that your eyeshadow contrasts it. Good choices!
