A young female reporter learned this the hard way. She was instructed to leave a murder trial because her outfit was deemed inappropriate for court. She was wearing gold leggings.

Do you believe her outfit was appropriate work-attire for a courtroom?
I don't think this is appropriate for court at all; you have to respect the venue! It's a cute outfit for drinks after work, or a weekend outfit, but even for a reporter's mostly casual day, this is pushing the limits.
ReplyDeleteToo bad she didn't have an emergency pencil skirt stashed somewhere - exchange that for the leggings and she would have been perfectly appropriate.
Not to mention: leggings aren't pants!

DeleteI say, at least she's covered up and really dressed fairly modestly. I think because she's a reporter and not an attorney she should be able to wear whatever she wants with important areas of the body covered appropriately like she had in the outfit already. I think it probably caused more of a stink removing her than it did just leaving her there and let her receive opinions later.

DeleteI would not wear this into a courtroom. Might wear it to a club, but not a courtroom. Guess I'm an advocate of maintaining certain boundaries in certain settings. Isn't decorum important in classrooms, courtrooms, places of worship.
ReplyDeleteIf this had been about her skirt length I would be all up on the feminist barricades... ;) and I still can't help but wonder if a guy reporter in low-sitting pants with the undies showing would have been reglemented the same way (if this is equivalent; if not: my apologies to those dressed either way)... However, leggings-as-pants is nearly universally agreed to be fashion no-go-territory, I guess? With a longer top over it it might have worked, though then there's still the color issue. Anything glittery should not be work attire.
ReplyDeleteI think she's pushing it by wearing those leggings as pants. If she'd worn a longer black garment, I think she might have gotten away with it. Given she's a reporter, I don't feel like the gold color is some horrendous faux-pas. It could have worked. (Neon, on the other hand...)

ReplyDeleteTwo rules I follow while getting dress - Weather appropriate and venue appropriate. And this clearly isn't venue appropriate as everyone else stated before me.

DeleteI'd say appropriate if you work in an after hours joint ... disco etc. but most decidedly not courtroom ... let alone an office. Gold leggings scream 'party'.

Yeah...kind of disrespectful if you ask me. It's not that they're JUST gold leggings, they're tight, sparkly gold leggings and her shirt isn't long enough to cover her cooch. And it's a MURDER trial. Boo.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I think the outfit pushes the boundaries for the venue, I still rankle at the thought of her actually being kicked out for it. I've never seen a man making the headlines for being booted for inappropriate clothing. I would've preferred to see her get a warning, and get kicked out for the second infraction. She's young; she deserves a break for being naive.
