Makeup

To introduce my new hair, I spent a lot of time on my makeup.  I tried to create an attractive face and used what I've learned over the past year.

Here's a closer look that helps show what I did.

I used black eyeliner on my upper lid, green and gold eyeshadows blended where they meet, brown powder for my eyebrows, false eyelashes (cut in half for easier application) and obviously lipstick.

I have oddly-shaped eyes so, to correct that, I extended their width with  eyeliner.

This look may appear simple, but the package is the result of many failed past efforts and lots of time spent imagining how my male face might be transformed into a more feminine one.  I realize my success in achieving that is limited, but my hopes aren't high -- I'm simply reaching for a better look, not a pretty female face.  At this stage, I merely want to move in the right direction; I don't have to cross the finish-line.

Any suggestions for improvement?

  1. I think you did very well! The green and gold is very flattering. This is a great nighttime look. Have you tried doing a daytime look? Would love to see that too :) Heather

  2. I think you're better at eyebrows that I am! A couple things I might suggest - and you'll find that using different wigs will change this - is going a little warmer with the colours for the eyes, like a coppers and browns. There is a chance that may wash you out. I might recommend starting with a brown liner instead of black. I'd also like to see you in a lighter pink lip, but I certainly know how hard it is to find the right lipstick! I'm so jealous of your ability to use false lashes, those things scare the living daylights out of me!

  3. I think you did a great job. The colors go really well with the hair. It creates a very pleasing sunny effect. I'm not a fan of the cat-eyes though. Its just a personal thing, cat eyes + bold eyeshadow isn't my favorite look.

  4. I'm not sure if this is my personal opinion or if I read it on a make-up blog one time, but I think the best looks go bold on the lips or the eyes, but not both at once. The eye shadow looks lovely, but maybe try it with a more neutral lip color. The lip color is great too, but I'd pair it with lighter eyes.

  5. I love the natural, glittery look of your makeup. Lovely hair. :)

  6. Thanks, guys. Your feedback helps. I'm facing a steep learning-curve here.

  7. I'm in love with the green, and the eyebrows are perfect. I agree with Cara on switching to a brown eyeliner instead of black when you are wearing softer/warmer hair colors.

  8. I like the green and gold combination. It is one that I use fairly frequently on myself.

  9. I like the color scheme and I think you are improving. Maybe look into some brow tutorials for 'creating' a shape. I think you're improving on the brow thing, but brows frame your whole face. It's something you don't think about, but looks at different celebrities, compare their brows and how it makes an impression of their face.

I agree that a brown liner would look better with this look, but that's because it goes better with the green/gold shadow, and your eyes.

If you like the dark eye liner look, look for a grey/charcoal, and maybe try pencils or my new favorite gel liner. I picked some Maybelline eyestudio gel liner up. It's great for doing subtle looks, but also adding more to make it more dramatic. It also comes WITH a brush, and I find it a heck of a lot easier to use than liquid liners.

I actually like the combo of dark lipstick and gold/green shadow.

Go you for trying stuff out. It's taken me forever to learn the few make-up techniques I use. Even though I am cis-female, I did not have make-up wearing parents/grandparents nor friends interested in teaching me.

I've learned make-up can be a lot like learning art analysis. I use the same techniques as I would to judge a painting as I would an outfit or makeup look's composition.

  10. In the close-up it's evident how well the new hair color matches your eyes! Pretty! Also, yes, the color scheme is great! I have a feeling, though, that dark brown eyeliner would go even better with this overall look. And I'm impressed by how well you apply makeup after what's probably a much shorter practicing time than what I've had... I still can't apply eyeliner without smudging it.

  11. Your best look yet!
I would suggest brown liner and mascara before applying the false lashes. I also curl my lashes. And choose either bold eyes or a bold lip, but not both at once.
Secret: I did pageants as a kid, so I've always loved long hair and makeup.

  12. I love the gold/green combination on your lids! I'm terrible at make-up application so anything beyond mascara looks good to me. Maybe you could give me tips on trying false lashes...my first and only attempt I wound up with some stuck to my thumb, some stuck sideways on my eyelid and glue in my eye.

  13. "I'm simply reaching for a better look, not a pretty female face." Hey, that's my motto, too!

I disagree with everyone. I like the black eyeliner. I think if you had used brown, it would have made the look boring, and I know that's not what you're going for. So seriously, stick with the black if that's your thing (it's my thing, too, so we can be twinnies). I think the eyebrows are pretty good. I might make them a little darker, though. Annnnd, last but not least, since you don't have much of a crease in your eyelid, I'd suggest creating a faux one by blending a medium brown eyeshadow where a real one would go, stop the green there, and then, on top of that, swipe a light barely-there shadow right under the brows.

You do have odd shaped eyes, don't you? Love 'em! Big circular eyes aren't fun to play with.

  14. I like the black, but I personally think it would have been just fine without the eyeshadow. That way, the bold lipstick and the eyes would be balanced! Plus, that's how I wear my own makeup, so I may be biased...

  15. If you want a darker color than brown for eyeliner, but the black is too harsh.... layer brown over purple or green eyeliner. I do it now, with purple, and it really brings out my brown eyes much better than brown liner alone

  16. I absolutely love your new hairdo and your makeup is so pretty. I'm hopeless when it comes to makeup (I usually only wear mascara and lipgloss) but I really love what you've done with your eyes and the colour of your lips is beautiful!

  17. I love the new wig, and I think you look ready for a night on the town!

The eyeliner is a little heavy for my taste (I like a black pencil, then use a flat brush to smudge it for a softer look). I think you are doing very well on your brows!

You may want to have a professional shaping done so that you have a good structured shape to maintain (I get my brows done every couple of months - it's cheap and pretty painless). Suss out a salon that will treat you right!

I think your lip colour is my favourite, though - that deep burgundy is so nice on your skin tone. And I think I am completely jealous of your amazing skin! You don't seem to have a single pore!

  18. I agree with Sheila! Great skin and a vast improvement in applying your make-up. Try smoky-eyes (it makes your eyes look bigger and impressive)! And for this look I would just make your lips a bit fuller using a lip liner before lipstick. Kisses :) (and I would love to see you as a brunette too..)

  19. I love the makeup :) I would suggest trying a dark brown liner and smoking it out so it doesn't look as harsh!

  20. How are your eyes oddly-shaped?! Maybe the eyeliner really is tricking me, but they actually look like beautiful eyes.

  21. Nice makeup, I like the colors, especially the green! Suggestions: Using a shimmery white on the inner corners of your eyes always looks good and brightens the eyes, in my opinion. and maybe darken your eyebrows a little bit. :)
