Scenes of a mother and her daughter, happy together, engaged in shared femininity. It's what I always wanted in my youth. Sadly, my every effort toward it -- and there were hundreds because, for years, I refused to give up -- was rebuffed and condemned. Looking at pictures like these is healing balm on an old psychic wound.

Mother-Daughter Outfits
Lately I've been enjoying looking at mother-daughter outfits. Sure, the matching clothes are cute but they have deeper meaning to me. You can probably guess why.

I have never worn a Mother daughter outfit. I have worn sister sister outfits and I think that is part of the reason to this day why I feel such a strong need to dress apart. I felt my sister and I were considered one unit.
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame that you have these wounds.
bisous

Thank you, Suzanne, for your compassion. I'm over the past.
DeleteI understand why some women might dislike m-d outfits because they felt controlled by their mother. Those wounds are as deep as mine. Funny how something like this can affect us differently depending on our family relationships.
I can completely understand where you are coming from and we envied what we couldn't have. I kept quiet about what I wanted and dressed every chance I got when no one was around. Invariably that meant raiding my mother's closet but I never thought about matching mother and daughter outfits.
ReplyDeleteThis was my ultimate dream growing up. Alas...
DeleteI have to admit that I do this with little S pretty often but not exact matches. We will both wear a striped top and overalls and ankle boots or something like that. I never did this with my Mom but I love doing it with S. She even requests I wear things like her at times. I think it's because I love clothes and style so much and I know there's a very short window of time where I get to pick out her clothes. If you're ever down south and want to dress like twinsies, let me know!
ReplyDeleteI will! Your little one is lucky to have a mom who's attracted to fashion and willing to share her talent. At some age, kids start to rebel and dislike being dressed like mommy so enjoy it while you can. :-)
DeleteMy mom and I had a couple of matching outfits in the early 70s - she sewed them and I was so proud and felt so grown-up and ladylike to be dressed like her. It does create a bond between mother and daughter.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are beautiful (the second one with the black frill skirt is everything). I never did this with my mother... but I'm pretty sure I told you how she used to dress my brother and I in identical clothes, which is not nearly as cool or cute but amazing Awkward Family Photo fodder :) HA!
