How Much?!

I went shopping today at Neiman Marcus. It's a tony store and fun to look in. I saw the beautiful shoes shown here which look even nicer in person. High-quality material, fine construction. They're made by Gucci.

What threw me though was the price-tag -- they cost $990.00. Wow, does anyone pay that much for shoes?

This made me wonder -- how much is the most you've paid for shoes? If you had a thousand dollars, would you spend it on a single pair? If they were really, really cute?!

  1. The most I've ever paid for shoes is $400 for a pair of boots (they were half price!). However, I have regularly paid $300+ for shoes - but they had better be awesome! I also want them to be made in a first-world country, in an ethical and environmentally-responsibly way. I am also happy to support a Canadian or US or other designer.

While I adore those shoes, they are too high for me (even with that platform), so I wouldn't pay that. If I had a $1000, I would probably buy a $300 pair of shoes, and then buy oodles of other things from the thrift stores!!

  2. I'm with Sheila on this. I'd be hard pressed to want to pay $1,000 for any pair of shoes.

I've paid about $300 for shoes, maybe a bit more but never more than that.

I've honestly never seen a pair of shoes that I'd be willing to spend more than $500 on. Possibly if they were handmade just for me, a one-of-a-kind thing I might.

Those shoes are wild! They remind me of that groovy show with Goldie Hawn that danced at the beginning... Laugh In I think it was called.

    1. Yes, "Laugh In"! Actually "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In." It was the most popular show of the Sixties and everyone loved it, including me.

  3. For me it is easy to get de sensitized to price as I wander my nearby stores, ( sadly, Gucci, Prada, mui Mui, Bergdorf's) and then i wake up, and think WTF.. then I go to the kids department and shop or search ebay.
I am in love with Gucci though, but not at that price. I shop more like Shiela with the occasional Bergdorf's bender ( made tolerable in the kids department: Gucci, Stella, Marc Jacobs.. all reasonably priced and they fit me! ) thank heavens.
Maybe Aldo will come up with something comparable? or Zara , but I will not shop there.
    Gorgeous shoes, though...

  4. Shoes? Hmm, maybe a couple of hundred for a pair of boots, but they better last a lifetime.
But bags, that's a different story. Yes, I would pay €/$ 1000 (and I have)...

    1. You're right. Sometimes I suspect people buy conspicuous brands like that more for social prestige than the actual item.

  6. Those are some cool shoes, but I wouldn't ever pay that much for anything but a car or home item (fridge, etc). I haven't had the means to pay more than fifty or so for a pair, but if I find the perfect boots in good leather I may splurge...wait, I got my girl child a pair of Birkenstocks for a good sum but they will last for years.
I've bee thinking about you! I found a podcast called the Bowery Boys. They talk about places in NYC that you've blogged about. It makes me imagine the three of you hanging out and having fun.

  7. They are v pricy! The most I paid was £90 two years ago for my teal Doc Martens because I had to walk so much on my way to work in the winter. I've worn them so much and they're still going strong and I'm wearing them now so they really were worth the money!x

  8. Like Sheila, the most I've paid is just under $400. (Which wound up resold, but c ' est la vie). Again like Sheila, I'm willing to pay upwards of $300 (though you know I'm always looking for a deal), for shoes made in first world countries with good ethical working conditions for the producers.

Plus the brands I've owned have great resell value when I want to try something else.

Of course that's changed a bit since I have shifted to working for myself instead of a big company but I still would rather save up for one quality pair to wear a million times than cheap ones made by questionable companies or out of inferior products.

That said $990! Those shoes are lovely, but no way. Like Kezzie said, I want my shoes to keep going strong.

  9. Wow, they are gorgeous - and I would only spend that much for a weekend in NYC. I think I've spent $150 max on some fab leather boots. xox

  10. I would pay $300 or abit more for good leather boots and I have bought several pairs like that and they are timeless and the quality lasts for years.. also usually also the kind you can get re-soled if you need to. I would not pay $1000 for shoes or boots, its crazy. I'm also going further down that pathway of having less 'things' and really looking at what things we need vs want and why we buy them in the first place. It's been interesting doing my uniform experiment for this reason.

Those shoes ARE cute but I wouldnt pay that much for them. You'd look fabulous in them though :)

  11. Funny I featured these in a layout I did about Gucci and then I saw them in Paris at a high end store and had to snap a photo as I had looked at them at work so much!!

Well for some $1000 is like $100 so I guess then, yeah I would.

  12. My most expensive shoes are my Valentino Rockstud, I own two pair but I don't wear them that often. I also have a pair of Gucci loafers but was lucky to find them half the price (which is also expensive by the way ahah). I usually prefer high end bags anyway, and mixing them with low cost clothes is the best option. Those shoes are super gorgeous, by the way ! Kisses

  13. That is rather steep for sure! I think the most I've ever paid for a pair of shoes was about a $100.00 ($150 absolute tops, but I really can't recall going over $100 before). If I had the means, I'd be totally fine with climbing above that point, but I don't feel like I need to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to super expensive footwear in the slightest - especially since classic styles tend to work best with my mid-century vintage wardrobe and those can be had for a reasonable price still from numerous sources.

In person, the most expensive shoes I've ever seen were about $2,500, but I've spotted others in magazines and online for even more. It is rather hard to wrap my head around spending that much for a single pair, but I can understand the allure and desire that could lead a wealthy fashionista to do so, especially if they were a very limited production run or even a bespoke pair.

Knowing what a shining you've taken to Canada, Ally, I'd like to wish you a very happy Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.

  14. I've paid $100.00-$150.00 but that is rare.
I just don't have that standard of living. Actually I think those prices are insane.

  16. Everything is relative in life. If you earn € 250.000 net a year (not me... not me) you would probably pay this.
I know I have a very handsome salary and low cost. Which means I spend more than the average woman on clothes and accessories. But 990... No...

  17. Those shoes are pretty fabulous and I agree with Suzanne...they are very Goldie on Laugh In (which I loved). The most I've ever paid is around $125, although if money were no object I'd love a pair of Louboutins.

  18. Wow! I love them but I don t think I would pay that much. The most I paid was €160 . For boots!

  19. I think the most I've ever spent was about $200, but I've gotten pairs that were more expensive retail. I like to hit sales as much as possible for a pair of shoes that will last me awhile. Those are gorgeous by the way.

  20. Now I am probably the least fashionable person who reads your blog dear Ally ... However I LOVE those shoes and have been drooling over them since you posted this picture (had a problem with commenting :( ) They are however very much out of the price range I would allow myself to spend on shoes but if I won the Lotto I would be calling you to get me a pair!

  21. Those are fabulous! I admit I did actually pay over $1,000 for shoes - they were a beautiful pair of Ralph Lauren snakeskin and Swarovski crystal sandals that I simply had to have as my wedding shoes! I wish I could get another occasion to wear them. I also splurged on a pair of pony-hair leopard print Louboutin pumps. Eeep, I'm bad.

    1. Not bad at all. I respect everyone's choices and resources. If I could have nice shoes, I'd wear them to the supermarket!

  22. Those shoes are fabulous! I've never spent that much on shoes... I take that back. I spent that much on figure skates, but that was for competition.

  23. You always have such fun questions! Hmmm the most I've ever spent was just a couple days ago on a pair of new running shoes ($180). My old ones literally started falling apart on me, so I bit the bullet and paid full price in store instead of shopping around online. I don't tend to pay much more than $100 for a pair of fashion shoes, as I feel that I can't really tell who paid $2,000 or $20 for their shoes. And if I had a $1,000 to spend on shoes...I definitely wouldn't spend it on one pair. :) Even though those Gucci shoes are super cute!

  24. Most I've paid is about 200.00 - and I did not even wear them that much :/

  25. Oh, man... those are friggin cute. But no. In good faith, I could never spend that much on a pair of shoes... maybe a handbag but I'm just not a big shoe person.

That said, I think I cringe if I get into the $100 range, LOL
