Now that Season One is out on DVD, I'm bingeing on "Orange Is The New Black." It's a wonderfully-written show about women in prison. I like how the show explores lives of disadvantaged women (of color, transgender, etc.) to a depth never seen before on TV.
The show was created by the woman behind "Weeds" and is based on the true story of Piper Kerman, a privileged white woman sent to prison a decade ago for a drug crime.
The show has a transgender character played by a transgender actress. That's a story-line uncommon in popular entertainment.
Have you seen the show? If not, you should.
I LOVE Orange is the New Black! I can't wait for season 2! I watched season 1 in about a weekend. Yeah, binge-worthy for sure.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE that show and Sophia is a really great character! I love how her story line is developed, how it both shows that she's happier living as a woman, but that like everyone else, she still faces difficulties with her transition, like her relationship with her son and discrimination when her hormone medication is reduced. There's such a broad range of characters on that show, and I love how everyone is both flawed and sympathetic at the same time.

ReplyDeleteLove love love it! Can't wait for the next season on Netflix. Laverne is one of my favorite characters on the show, and I really love how they portray Piper's bisexuality. I about died when she said something along the lines of how she's just attracted to hot people.

ReplyDeleteWe are addicted to this show too! Although we haven't quite made it through the first season yet. The writing is so clever, and even though there are sad or emotionally deep things too (sometimes disturbing), it's laugh-out-loud funny. We love Crazy Eyes and send each other texts "from" her. You're right that they really present the characters as both flawed and good-hearted. It's very interesting psychologically. And I adore the transgender character.
