Joan Jett

Name a bad-girl, my age, who still rocks with abandon...  Joan Jett!

I recently saw the movie "CBGB" and it reminded me of my love for Joan Jett.  Joan's been battling in the male-dominated world of rock music since the Seventies.  She started with Cherie Currie in their band, "The Runaways;" she's done solo work; and she skyrocketed to fame with "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts."

Regardless of how young you are, you've likely heard her hits -- "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"; "Bad Reputation"; and "Cherry Bomb".

Joan created an iconic persona of bad-girl: black leather jacket; black pants; signature hairdo and heavy eye-makeup.  Her look has shifted a little over the years but stayed recognizable.

Motivated by a concern for animal welfare, Joan's been a vegetarian her whole adult-life.

There's been rampant speculation during Joan's long career about her sexual orientation.  Joan's always refused to comment on that subject or release any private information.  As someone who intimately understands that situation, I saw good for her.  We're all entitled to privacy.  Just 'cause people enjoy our work doesn't entitle them to know who we're loving and bedding.

Do you know Joan Jett?  Do you like her music?

  1. A little story for you...my landlord is in a band that does pretty well so he knows a lot of musicians. Apparently one night Joan Jett was over in the basement! I have no idea until after the fact...would've been so neat to meet her! Oh well, maybe she'll come over another day :)

  2. I love Joan Jett because she is the ultimate rock chick. She's strong and she dresses badass. I can only aspire to look and actually be so cool. One day I will master that smoky eye thing she does.

  3. Know her, like her Art Form and her Style. I totally agree with respecting her Privacy and allowing even those in the Public Eye to disclose only what they chose to with a Peace about it. Sometimes revealing Private matters can carry it's own burdens, our Grandson recently suffered the consequences for that which led to hospitalization. Bullying is a huge issue among the Youth nowadays and you cannot protect the most vulnerable 24-7. There are still many Social biases and discriminations in this world, who needs the excess Drama... I don't blame Joan for leaving some things to speculation and keeping her most intimate things strictly Personal and Private. There are some things on a 'Need to Know' basis and some folks don't need to know. Thanks for coming by with encouragement during our Family's difficult time. Blessings from the Arizona Desert... 4. PS: Prayers and comfort being sent your way for your Dad and I Hope you can make a Memorable Trip out to see him soon. Father's Day is coming up and what a Delightful Surprise that would be. Our Trip was actually a Surprise for Mom and she didn't suspect how many of us were showing up either... you can tell by her Radiance that it meant the World to her! Dawn... The Bohemian

  5. Who DOESN'T love Joan Jett? Have you seen the 2010 movie The Runaways? It stars Kristen Stewart as Joan, which is unfortunate, but it's a pretty decent film overall. And Dakota Fanning plays Cherie!

    1. I agree. I don't know why people feel such strong impulse to place others in boxes.

  7. As a young girl, I always wanted her hair...I think at one point I had a more tamed down version of it (I am pretty sure I cut it myself). She rocks!

    1. Yes, she does. And if I could ever figure out how to get her hair, I'd wear it right now!

  8. You might find this to be odd ... but, even though I have heard her name, I have not listened to her music. At least knowingly.

  10. I'm so jealous you got to see CBGB - I've wanted to watch that for a while. I'm pretty sure we don't get the network it was showing on because I can't seem to find it. I do love Joan Jett, or what I know of her, and I admire her. I think I do prefer Suzie Quatro, though. Because who didn't want to be Leather Tuscadero when they were little? ;-)

  11. She was a trubedour. She paved the wave for future female rockers, and it's on her shoulders they stand. If you don't know her, check out Brandi Carlile. She reminds me of a contemporary JJ, with an extraordinary voice that blows me away. But when she rocks, she f#@$ ing ROCKS. Xoxo Kara

  13. I recently watched "CBGB" as well - four times because I really enjoyed it.
I was introduced to Joan when I got the Rock 80 album from K-Tel when I was young. I've loved her ever since. She's the total rock and roll package - cool looking, strong attitude, and great music. I admire how she's been herself for the whole course of her career and hasn't had to "re-invent" herself to keep fans.
I'm going to spend some time today listening to Joan - thanks!

  14. Growing up, I was a Joan Jett fan in a Pat Benatar world. There were several girls who dressed in homage to Pat Benetar in high school, and her songs were way more popular, bu I just connected more with JJ's badass vibe. I still have "I Love Rock n' Roll" my iPod. Fun times.

  15. I LOVE Joan Jett! She's one of my favorite icons, and I love how she fought to prove herself in a male-dominated genre. One of my favorite concerts was getting to see her about five years ago. She can still rock it!
