Question: what's the most you'd pay for a watch?
I'm looking for a new wristwatch and want something nice. Something of value, a watch I can keep for years. But at how high a cost?
The best watches are mechanical ones made in Switzerland. The tradition of hand-making watches is still alive there and expert technicians not only make watches by hand, they make the tools they use by hand. Design and craftsmanship distinguish these watches from ordinary, mass-produced, quartz-powered ones.
I fell in love with a beautiful watch by H. Moser & Cie. Their website doesn't list prices. I should have realized that since the company limits the number of watches they make (to 50 of these, to 1,200 total), the price was going to be steep. But I had no idea what level that is. When I found it, I was shocked... but... it is within reach. The real question is how important is this purchase to me, in terms of its priority against other potential purchases?
If you wear a watch (and yes I know the kids are using their phones these days instead), what's your limit? $500? $5,000? $50,000? More?
Oh that's beautiful! And "timeless" (ba-dum-tsh!)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'm one to guess at cost, but it's a beautiful functional piece of art.
I think when it comes to cost factor, you have to consider whether it's something worth that cost. Is it made by a small business/artisan/craft master? Will it fulfill a need in your life? Is it quality that will last a long time to a lifetime perhaps?
Having something because it's expensive has never appealed to me. I do see value in buying a higher price for something uniquely made in a quality manner (trippen or Fluevog shoes over a pair of louboutin for example) is worth it. Though, I come from a walk of life, if the price ain't listed, I definitely can't afford it!
;P
That watch is spellbindingly gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI adore wristwatches (and pocket watches, for that matter), but am super allergic to nickel, which is a common component in many watches, so I recently went more than 12 years between wearing a watch (I was gifted an Apple watch, which happily safely works for me, as part of the payment for a ecommerce building job I did last year). I got by, as many of us do these days, with my phone, but was pleasantly surprised to realize, upon sporting one again, just how much I'd missed being a watch wearer.

It's such a habit to me that if I lacked one, I'd still look at my arm. :)
DeleteIsn't that gorgeous! I love the stars! I do wear my watch but only when I remember... I have been wearing my Swatch watch from when I was a child but I've had other watches in the past but I prefer ones I can easily put on myself...which I struggle with!!!
ReplyDeleteOuch....I looked at the price of the watch!!! That's a lot!
There is a watch that I am tempted by- it's by Olivia Burton and has a gold bee on it - it was about £115 but I think that's probably more than I would pay for one!
A gold bee?!! My last name, in German, means bumble-bee.
