Sleeping At Work
This is a true story. I have a link to prove it.
A bank employee in Germany was tired. As he feel asleep at his desk, his hand was on his computer keyboard. The number 2 key, in particular. He nodded off and his hand typed 222,222,222.22.
The problem is he was supposed to make a bank-transfer of 64-Euros and, instead, accidentally transferred 222 Million Euros (which is about $300 Million dollars).
While the employee was napping, the transfer was processed. A co-worker was supposed to verify the transfer but he wasn't paying attention and he let it go through.
Later the bank discovered the error and fired the co-worker. The co-worker contested the firing in court and that's when this story came out. Good news -- the co-worker got reinstated at this job.
Have you ever slept at work? Or wanted to?
Scientific research shows that brief naps do a lot to refresh us and some companies now allow employees to take them. But not with their fingers on the keyboard...
I worked with someone who regularly fell asleep, this person was a teaching assistant, I'm not kidding, the person was well known for it and not a word was said to them x
ReplyDeleteThere was one time that I was so completely exhausted at work, I started searching for a quiet corner to nap in on my lunch break. Couldn't find one, had to settle for way too much caffeine instead.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that they have "nap rooms" at the Huffington Post? And they encourage employees to use them to bolster activity? And in Japan, falling asleep at work is actually a sign of a GREAT employee--one who's so dedicated that he works himself to the point of physical exhaustion.
I've not fallen asleep at work, even when I was a switchboard operator on the 3.30 to midnight shift and not allowed to read! x
ReplyDeleteBwa-ha-ha! I love this story. I am a firm believer in the restorative powers of the nap. I would question how much Japanese people value a napper at work though. LOL.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I worked in Minneapolis for a company that had "quiet rooms" you could schedule for 30 mins. It was complete with a comfy chair and sofa.
ReplyDeleteLOL--only cat-napped once when I had a migraine!! but not on my keyboards!
ReplyDeleteLol! I have wanted to nap at work. I got called in a couple of times from working late to work morning, but I never actually slept at work.
ReplyDeleteI do often take a nap when I get home from school or work, if I'm going for long stretches, I just get overwhelmed. It's partially a side effect of my medicine though. I'm either wired all the time or not anxious, but sort of tired.
I have not fallen asleep at work however there are some days that it is very close!!!! I have however watched a co-worker catch a couple of winks.
ReplyDeleteI've never fallen asleep at work but I worked in a hotel with a boy who fell asleep all the time. He was always coming out of the rooms with candlewick bedspread patterns embedded in his face or we'd find him rolled up asleep in big bundles of dirty linen. xx
ReplyDeleteLOL! I have never fallen asleep at work although I've wanted to. Conditions have to be exactly right for me to sleep these days. :) Funny story!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have slept today at work, I was so tired. Tempting but no, I've not done that yet
ReplyDeleteYikes !
ReplyDeleteI don't think i have slept at work.
However back when I was in school and had a summer job i remember there was a bed near the restroom where you were allowed to take naps.
when I studied in the university I had a part time job as IT (of coarse) support specialist on the phone. I've started at 6 am and there were very few phone calls so I could sleep till about 9. I could hear the phone ring and my chair was so big (for tiny me) so no one could see what I was doing while working.
ReplyDeleteI sympathize completely with the sleeper. When you're tired, there's just no going around it. I dislike how it seems people make others like this out to be lazy, when there are a multitude of reasons why they may be fatigued.
ReplyDeleteI'm a very sleepy person naturally. While in school (high school, university, etc) I could never stay awake for a lecture longer than 10 mins. I also have the amazing ability to instantly fall asleep anywhere in almost any position. But it's never been because of laziness. It's more because of a physical condition.
There have been times I wanted to, but I'm not a napped, so it never happens unless I'm I'll.
ReplyDeleteI have fallen asleep at my desk on many occasions. I have also fallen asleep at depositions and while on trial. Once at a deposition I had taken my shoes off for comfort and when I awoke someone had taken my shoes out of the conference room and placed them in the hall.
ReplyDeleteI also remember one time trying a lead paint case where the charge to the jury includes dozens of pages of drivel from the NYC code. I just could not keep my eyes open and the judge was really ticked off and stopped his charge.
