Our Cameras
I bought a new camera!
Like most bloggers, I started taking pictures with a simple point-and-shoot camera. As I got deeper into blogging, I realized I enjoy artistic photography as much as I want to record outfits so I figured I'd step up to a real d-SLR ("digital Single Lens Reflex"). I asked for and received one for Christmas in 2011. I got a Nikon D3000 which is a nice piece of equipment.
Recently, I decided I want to try my hand at video. A video-camcorder costs $500+ and, since I don't know how deeply I'll get into video, I didn't want to invest that kind of money into a device that can only record video. Looking around, I learned many d-SLR's have video-capacity even though my D3000 didn't. So I toyed with the idea of upgrading my camera to one that has dual capacity for both photography and video.
I hesitated for a while because my D3000 isn't that old and didn't need to be replaced. Plus, my frugal nature hated the idea of having two cameras and not using the D3000. Then, by fate, I read a post of one of my blogger-friends, Emma, saying she wants to graduate up from her point-and-shoot to a d-SLR. Two problems solved!
I just bought a Nikon D5200 for myself (which can record video) and gave Emma the D3000 for her blogging. She received the camera in the mail this week and she reports excitement to learn new things about photography. It's great when a simple act like this can enrich someone's life. I hope Emma's pictures improve and she find new joy in photography.
What kind of camera do you use? Do you have any aspirations to improve your picture-taking?
P.S., The sunflowers, purchased today, are my first photo with the new camera.
Congratulations! I too recently upgraded to my brother's old digital camera.
ReplyDeleteNow I have a Canon PowerShot S80. It's still quite old, but it's a step up from my former digital camera, and it has a manual setting!
Beautiful!! Hoping to upgrade in the future. I discovered my photography interest when starting my business. I would love to shoot modelling sessions-- I want to do a whole Lookbook! Just need some models and a bit better camera :)
ReplyDeleteWee! Hooray for new cameras. I have a Canon SD3500. It was the very best camera I could afford at the time. I've had it for a couple of years now. It's a good little camera, though it's showing it's age. It's blurrier more often, the battery pack is semi-broken, but it chugs along as I use it every single day.
ReplyDeleteIt's much better than my previous camera, so I can't complain.
Wow. Beautiful picture. I'm such a lousy photographer I don't think a new camera would help me!
ReplyDeleteI use a 7.2 mgpx point and shooter and then I edit the photos using picmonkey.com. I am saving my money for a "real" camera. I sell on Etsy and I think my store would be way more successful if my photos were of better quality.
ReplyDeleteWow this camera looks amazing. The clarity and detailing of the sunflowers is incredible. I wish I had a better camera. I'm still using the basic digital variety but it does the job.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your purchase, the camera sounds amazing and you can see it from the beautifully detailed pic ! I have a Sony reflex camera, planning to buy a new camera one day but for now we're happy with this. I think my next one will be a Nikon as well ;)

Hi Ally .. congrats on your new camera. I have a Nikon D90 that I love . I was spoilt in that when we went digital while still in Germany Keenan bought me the D70 so when that dropped I replaced it with the 90 as opposed to the 7000 after reading numerous reviews.. I don't need to upgrade but one day will have a D700.
ReplyDeleteHope you're Sunday its fabulous.
You are sooo sweet :) I have been trying to squeeze in some camera-time this week/weekend despite my looming Monday deadline. I've caught on pretty quickly to some aspects and am working on a post for tomorrow or Tuesday that will feature some of the AWESOME photo tricks I've picked up on!
ReplyDeleteMatt keeps laughing at me because I'll randomly snatch up the camera and start geeking out about it all over again, with absolutely nothing to prompt it. Suffice to say this is one of the most incredible gifts I've ever gotten :)
I am so excited to see all of the amazing photos and videos that you will be posting! I love my camera, but don't use it as much as I should. I really think spending time playing around with settings helps. Also, I take a lot of pictures of food. Especially when it is hot and steam is coming up. It is really cool trying to capture that.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great camera. I carry mine everywhere!

Fabulous present for yourself - hope you have loads of fun with your new camera and that Emma enjoys hers too.
ReplyDeleteI use a bit of everything... I have a Nikon D3100 which I love, a couple of point and shoots, and of course my phone. I admit that most of my blog photos are taken on my phone - unless my phone is in them! I love using my DSLR but I'm very bad at taking it out with me or reaching for it when I have something at home that needs photographing. I must do better and choose the best camera at all times!
Hooray for a new camera!! I am jealous! Mine is starting to fade but it gets the job done for now!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful for you and for her! That was super nice of you and she will love her new camera. I just got a new camera myself and am loving it! That is actually why you're seeing my face a bit more on my blog now. I finally have a camera that can shoot usable photos in the cave where I live with no light. ;-)

That worked out great! I can't wait to see an Ally vid...of YOURSELF! :)
ReplyDeleteIdea: You sitting in (darn, I forgot her name) your car and talking to us out the rolled down window...and then opening the door and standing to reveal your fabulous outfit to us!!
Great idea, Lisa.
DeleteOh, i began taking my pictures with a Nokia phone and about a year ago bought a normal Canon that is always in my bag.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had someone to take pictures for me but I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
Too bad it's already past but I'd love a video of the Mermaid parade...
I have a simple little digital Fuji camera with zoom which suits my purposes well; it was a gift. I also have a film SLR which has a zoom only marginally better than that of my digital so it doesn't get used very much which I confess to feeling guilty about but then I found out film is made of gelatine and being a vegetarian I prefer not to buy such things so it evens itself out.
