Gender Bending

As you know, I dress in male clothes when presenting as a man and female clothes when presenting as a woman. Occasionally, I see a woman's shirt that's so pretty I wonder if I can get away with wearing it as a man. Is that against the rules?

The only way you'd know it's a girl's shirt are the buttons and that takes a sharp eye. (Men's shirts button one way; women's shirts button the opposite way.)

Anne, a blogger and artist in LA, had a colorful shirt she didn't want. I raised my hand and offered to take it. Anne generously gifted it to me during our meeting in Vancouver. I adore this shirt and plan to wear it in normal life when otherwise looking like a guy. Do you think that's okay?

Have you ever worn men's clothing?

  1. I have a ladies shirt that has 2 rows of buttons and i love it. It does not matter if it is for ladies or men as long as you feel comfortable in it. It should not matter :), Looking good.

  2. If you wear it with confidence, no one will even think twice about it! I like it. Would love to see it with jeans and a blazer (presenting male OR female!)

  3. Ohhhh, so glad to see you wearing it, Ally. It's great! I don't think it matters which way the buttons go. I sew my own clothes and there's plenty of times I've sewn them one way or the other depending on style, error, or mood.

  4. It looks great on you!
I wear "male" shirts a lot as they have longer arms. But you don't get the pretty fabrics. I also dress my inbetween sizes (boy/men) son in women's shirts sometimes. Noone notices!
And you are wearing a sly rainbow message...perfect :-) xo Jazzy Jack

  5. Here is a quip taught to me by Maureen, my 3D Construction (ie draping and sewing) instructor at Otis in 1984: "Women's shirts button on the right, because women are always right." Mens shirts button the opposite so that they wouldn't open their shirts when drawing swords in the olden days. (My grammar is wonky there but you get the idea).

I've worn men's garments since the 70s because that's what us prep school girls did. Maybe it was a "wear your older brother's preppy stuff" thing? I had no older brothers, but swiped some of my dad's polos with embroidered school names on the chest. Also remembering "team" crews that had colored bars CF. OK, getting WAY too dweeby here.

The shirt was MEANT to be yours! I'd love to see you style it girly as well. It can swing both ways! And you don't have to worry about hot flashes! Wondering -- would you wear a tie with this?

  6. I frequently wear mens jeans and pants. I find a better fit with waist/leg and I can find them cheaper than womens. I LOVE your shirt. I don't think it looks out of place at all. I think it's your inner girl shining through.

  7. I loved this shirt on you - you had it on at the swap! I always thieved clothes from my dad's and brother's closets. Not so much with L, though.

    1. It's interesting that you noticed -- I thought I was invisible at the swap. Not that I wanted to be, just felt that I was. Only you and Shawna registered my presence.

  9. This is such a wonderful print. I love that you got it through the swap.

I have borrowed my husband's hats and sweaters from time to time. I quite like men's clothing and can often be found shopping for my husband.

    We are both enablers.

  11. I think it'll be a great bit of color with a blazer or jacket, too. :D

  12. I love this fun colorful top. I think there's a lot of things that's considered menswear that can be worn by women more than the other way around.

  13. As a teenager I used to wear an old suit jacket which was part of a men's suit, as my everyday jacket It was too big but I think I pulled it off :) your new top reminds me of one I was given when I was at school, except mine was just red stripes.

Someone I used to know would often buy ladies shirts from charity shops, but self conscious, he would ask his girlfriend to buy them.

  18. oh you look great in this shirt (however for me it's more common to see you wearing female clothes). I always get confused with the button proper placement. I guess despite my tiny size (I wear size 0) I have both male and female buttons. So I guess nobody cares about proper placement of buttons any longer.
I love the stripes here! gorgeous colors!

  19. This could totally "pass" as a men's shirt, especially during Pride weekend :) I wear men's clothing sometimes, but I think it's a lot easier for women to appropriate men's fashions. A rare double standard that works in our favor! I did have a (100% straight, cis-gender male) ex who wore a women's button-down as a blazer for a while...until I stole it from him, haha.

  20. you should do a post with male and female outfits showcasing this cheery shirt.

  22. I absolutely love that shirt, Ally, and would not have assumed right off the bat that it was sold as a woman's garment had you not mentioned it. I for one support folks of any gender wearing whatever they please. Clothing should not be gender specific, IMO, and I hope that time goes on, we'll continue to see less rigid adherence to the outdated notion of such.

  23. my late great granny used to always buy my sister and me boys' pjs every winter. they were flannel and had trains on them. and the flap in the front! so we'd wear them backwards! her daughter would buy us silk nightgowns from old-school department stores packed in boxes with tissue paper. i thought it was so glamorous. still love the silky pjs!

  24. Sorry I'm so behind on my blog reading! Why yes, yes I have worn men's clothing. My mother dressed me in boys clothing until I was in my teens. I HATED it. I was a rough and tumble tom boy but I loved frills and ruffles. My mother dressed me in more durable clothes... boys clothes. It really damaged my self esteem. No boyfriends, everyone thought I was gay, bullying, rumors - the works. Now I hate wearing pants, tee shirts, dress shirts, baseball caps, anything that reminds me of those days. It's kind of funny isn't it? Growing up, you wanted to be a girl - and so did I!

  25. I think anything goes these days, and I do not think I would know that was a women's shirt. Ha but it does make me think of that episode of Seinfeld where George and Jerry meet Elaine's father and Jerry is wearing a striped jacket--very funny.

  27. Great shirt - you can definitely wear that any time :)

I wear men's clothes, I have a pile of men's tshirts as I find ones made for women are often too fitted when I want something comfortable for wearing hiking or on the motorbike (not enough material around my middle!).

  28. Are you kidding? I love that shirt - would look great with a navy suit and tie. Or, with some capri pants and cute sandals. Adorable.

  29. Hi there! In catching up on SpyGirl's blog I saw that you received this shirt that I had gifted to her. So pleased that it has found a good home! It goes great with your beaming smile. As I recall, it was made to be a beach cover up, so wearing it as a shirt is a tiny bit subversive :)
