As someone who's still new to New York (only 4 years so far!) I had never heard of Bess before. However, I am always interested in the stories of tragic beautiful public figures who live glamorous lives that end in isolation. Like Betty Hutton, Anita Ekberg, or (my personal favorite) The Countess de Castiglione. It's almost af if all of these women, Bess included, were too smart for the society/time they lived in.

XxMO
madame-ostrich.comMadame Ostrichhttp://www.madame-ostrich.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885867892898159023.post-50520264343903732562015-01-09T16:50:50.960-05:002015-01-09T16:50:50.960-05:00scandal and deceit! a couple names are familiar, b...scandal and deceit! a couple names are familiar, but i didn't know the story before this. thank you for sharing it with us.oomph.https://www.blogger.com/profile/07167475589041134144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885867892898159023.post-8838677731705526522015-01-09T13:50:09.507-05:002015-01-09T13:50:09.507-05:00I like when you do posts like this, I also loved t...I like when you do posts like this, I also loved that quite. I have, however, heard her famous quote that you love. (I love it, too.)

I also had to note how funny it is that she was pressured to make her name sound less Jewish, considering that in modern times, stars occasionally change their last names to sound MORE Jewish. (I'm thinking specifically of Whoopi Goldberg, but I'm pretty sure there are others.) She stood for fighting against discrimination. HOWEVER she then let her own self down by going against what she espoused as her values and ended up going down the path she did. Likely she stayed in seclusion for so many years because she was knew inside her self that she had essentially violated her own character all those years.... my 2 cents :)day2daywearhttp://day2daywear.blogspot.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885867892898159023.post-88545960687572785742015-01-08T21:01:08.587-05:002015-01-08T21:01:08.587-05:00I knew vaguely of her having watched the documenta...I knew vaguely of her having watched the documentary about Koch last year. This is fascinating background, and the context makes want I do know much more sensible. Love that quote, too, You have a very substantive blog.
