Scandalous

Being tall isn't easy for a woman. I'm 6'0" and nothing fits me. A conservative hem looks moderate on me and a normal-length hem is scandalous. There's nothing I can do about that.

I saw this cute prom-dress in a thrift-store for $9. Despite the scandal it will cause, I'm wearing it. Why? Because doing so makes me happy. Insanely happy. I don't care what scolds might say. Let them eat cake.

I'm fond of these strappy sandals. I've been looking for silver ones for a while and just stumbled across this pair in a thrift-store ($12). They fit wonderfully, which is rare since my feet are as big as my height.

The lovely necklace is a recent gift from my sweet friend Sara in Michigan.

How tall are you? Does your height limit your ability to find clothes?

  2. Well it's a great thing you've got lovely legs to make up for the lack of skirt length. ;)

As for me, I'm 5'3". But I'm also proportional, so petites are always proportioned wrong and regular sizes are always too long in the legs. So I have recently started buying men's jeans. I can buy a waist and leg length that fit. They're a bit baggier than is 'in style', but they fit right and that's more important to me most days. Although I did pick up two pairs of men's skinny jeans from hot topic, which seem to have good results!

  3. being only 5'3" my problem is pants. They're always too long. Thankfully hemming them is the solution, but I am terrible at getting to a tailor.

  4. I've 5'6 and my height is not really an issue, but my massive boobies hike up short dresses and makes them waaaaay too short.

  5. Such a cute dress, I can see why you were determined to wear it. Just don't bend over! If you drop a pencil you must dip gracefully, bending at the knees. It's wondrous for the thighs.

I am 5'9.25" so not as tall as you are but taller than the average female so yes it does make some trouble for me. I would gladly lose a few inches and be shorter. Skirts and dresses are shorter on me than intended too, though not always scandalous. Still it can make the proportion all wrong for the style of skirt. Some short dresses I just wear as a tunic instead. But I also have problems with torso proportions. I am longer than average everywhere so dresses don't fit me well. If it's an empire waist seam it will hit across the middle of my bust instead of under it, or if the seams are meant to hit right on the waist they will be an inch or two above mine and not flatter me. Sleeves are also shorter as are pants in both leg length and rise. Any other fit issues I have are things that could at least be sorted by a tailor but those ones are definitely height related.
Oh-meant to say I love the strappy shoes too!

  6. What lovely thrift finds! Cute shoes - they look like silver ribbons wrapped around your feet.
At just a little over 5 feet tall and petite, I have the opposite problem ... things are often too big or long! Gaping armholes and scandalously low necklines are a persistent problem when buying tops.

  7. Wow, $9 is such a steal for a cute dress like that! The colour is really, really nice!
Gladly I'm totally average in size, so that makes finding clothes, especially at thrift store, relatively easy.

  8. be sure to wear panties ;-)
in my twenty´s i wore such short dresses regularly - nobody screamed scandal. only sitting down in the subway was "yuck" - naked legs on the plastic seats feels not nice.
i´m 1,70m which is on the upper end of average around here. like it - lenght means i can add clothing volume without fear of frump :-)

  9. I LOVE the color of the dress! It almost matches your blog, lol! I have a pear-shaped body, so I tend to have a hard time with things stretching around my bum and looking short. That, and all of my height is in my torso, so things tend to look shorter on me. I saw a really cool idea on the interwebs, to add a bit of lace to the bottom of dresses and skirts to make them longer. I don't think that this dress needs it thought, it looks like a cute party dress! I am glad that you like the necklace! <3

  10. I think its good to wear what makes you happy! Thats all that counts, I think! Most people do not dare to wear what makes them really happy so its good to have someone who shows to the world that its okay doing it!

  11. very nice look and yay for Ally's legs! I'd definitely wear such dress for some fun time with the beloved.

I'm 5'1" and surely have issues with clothes. Pants are too long, mini dress is an issue. Thankfully my hubs does all the alters for me so right not if something is too long, I just think of how I want it to be. However it's limits me with patterns or images as I actually can't cut half of it. Other issue (and I guess you get with it) is unusual measurements - my waist is not slender and hips are narrow so I have to think about clothes you can't actually see that.

  12. In my opinion, great legs are meant to be shown off...so scandalous or not (I say not), go for it! That color is fabulous on you!

  13. i have the opposite problem being 5'-2"...everything swallows me up. minis hit my knees, midis hit my ankles, and ankle lengths drag on the floor! i have to wear super high heels to get mine to look as long as yours!

  17. This dress is beautiful. It is my favourite colour and I love it on you. Definitely wear whatever you want. I have a few dresses that short and have absolutely no hesitation in wearing them. But I can imagine it would be hard buying clothes being so tall (and also being short). Luckily enough I don't have too many problems. I am 5'4 and I like that height. Only occasionally I have dresses hemmed because I don't like anything that goes below the knee on me. Usually I can make dresses of most lengths work and I feel very fortunate about that.

  18. Let us hope there are no strong winds where you are ; ) You could have a Marilyn moment.

I adore the colour of this dress. It is gorgeous with the hair.

You now know I'm average height but I still find often that the dresses today are like "skater girl" length and too short. I often sew on an extra few inches of fabric to make them just above the knee.

  19. I'm only just over 5' and I do run into the odd purchasing problem. Petite clothes do nothing for me as I have really long arms and legs despite my size.

Things are much better now with the introduction of different leg lengths in trousers, etc. Up until about 15 years ago the only things that fitted were in the children's section :)

    BTW you're rocking that colour!

  20. First, that dress is really fantastic (and would look pretty great with some seamed stockings....). I'm 5'6" and a bit so I'm okay with most things fitting me, I do however, have wider shoulders and that can definitely pose some challenges! You know, after having scanned through the above comments I don't think a single person was "perfect". I guess this is more proof that you need to alter the clothes to fit you rather than the other way around.

  21. I'm 5ft 10 so find many things, vintage especially, are just too short for me and I have the added factor of big hips which shorten things a wee bit more. My hips didn't make themselves apparent until I was in my mid twenties though and I wore the shortest skirts with hot pants underneath prior to this!
