Summer Fun

I rarely wear shorts but thought, since everyone else is doing it, I should too.  (I hope you don't all jump off a cliff, or I'm doomed.)

I found these bright green shorts at my thrift-store for $1.99.  I searched for a yellow top to complement the shorts and found one but, after trying it on, realized it's too short.  So, instead, I dug into my closet for this tee from Victoria's Secret.  Completing the outfit is my comfy new wedges from Payless ($19.99).  I can't believe I found shoes that actually fit.

So, here's my version of a light, summery outfit.  I know the colors are an odd combination but, hey, it's Summer.

To make the ensemble more special, my BFF Sara -- whose blog is a must-read -- sent me beautiful orange-red nail-polish yesterday which I'm wearing here.  Sara remembered I wrote a while back that I was bored with my same colors and lack the imagination to find new hues, so she sent me her favorite shade which is now my favorite shade.

The cute button earrings are a gift from Lynne.

You guys have immense influence on me.  I'm like a 'tween mimicking her older sisters.

  1. Ally, I want your shirt! I've gone from a woman that never wore pink to one that adores it. I love the earrings with it; I thought they would be fun. I am wearing almost the same color nail polish as you, too, a new Colorstay Marmalade by Revlon. It's so obnoxious. I would have never worn it a year ago, but I love it!

I think those are bicycle shorts? The color-blocking is actually fabulous, but I know this older sister couldn't pull them off. You have amazing, long, toned legs, but they would be hard for many women to wear in broad daylight. We would be worried about how much was showing, er, lumps, undies, you know :o

They do bring back very fond memories of my late teen years, tho', when I could run around in neon leggings and pretend I was Madonna :)

    1. You know, I think you're right, Lynne. On a hanger, they looked like ordinary shorts but when I put them on, I was surprised how clingy and stretchy they are.

Like the yellow top that looked great but proved to be too short, I'm learning that actual wear is the real test for clothes. Do you guys adjust your outfits during the process of getting dressed? I used to conceive an ensemble beforehand, but reality often differs from my expectations.

    2. Yes, we do adjust in the process of getting dressed! Welcome to the wonderful world of foundation garments! :D I am not kidding, a good bra and a good slip are a woman's BEST friends. I've collected a number of full and half slips over the years, and have caught myself doing the broad daylight test as I got ready to assault the world, and gone running back inside for the right slip. I actually have recorded a couple of, er, slip-ups on the ol' blog :P

    3. Agreeing with Lynne, the stuff that usually stick around in my closet are clothes that need minimal fussing and 'extras' to make them work. I try to give outfits a test run if I'm worried about something being comfortable, but occasionally I'll have two swap something out to make it work.

I used to draw up ideas, but they would occasionally looking nothing like I expected. Other times the reverse would be true.

  2. Congrats on snagging those fab sandals. They're perfect for a good neutral colored dressier sandal. Your pedi makes me want to paint my toes! I really enjoyed my last mani, but I chipped it off so quickly.

  3. (I'm going to preface this by saying I feel like I'm always the debbie downer of commenters!)

I think this goes back to the leggings/other tight garments are not pants rule. The shorts are cute, but you need to wear a longer garment with them. We should never see crotch definition! (Or maybe that's just me.)

My suggestion is a billowy little black dress. The pop of color peeking out underneath would look really cool!

    1. Okay. I accept that reaction. I didn't expect the shorts to be tight when I bought them so this took me by surprise.

Also, sometimes my outfits turn out better than I expect; this time, it turned out worse. I almost want to take this post down 'cause there are several things I dislike about it. But creating the post took time and effort which are scarce in my life and I'm learning from your criticisms.

I think what I'll do is put up another post earlier than I planned to and hope, if you share my dislike of this one, you'll either skip it or offer constructive criticism on how to improve my poor choices.

    2. Ally, please don't take the post down. I think we've all had outfits that didn't turn out quite right. As you've seen, I post mine anyway and applaud that you do as well.

As for the tightness of the shorts, there is a fine line for which shirt works with which bottoms. I love this color combination but agree a bit more of a tunic would be better with these shorts. Live and learn, but don't worry too much about it.

    3. Ditto what Gracey says. We blog to learn. Sometimes that means things that don't work perfectly. And you got some suggestions on how to make the shorts work in different ways.

  4. Ally, I hope you won't take this post down. I think it takes a lot of courage to share what we're wearing with the public. I know I'm learning from my outfit pics - I'd recommend that peeps who aren't blogging occasionally photograph themselves. Those photos definitely provide an objective point of view we may not get in our own mirrors. I cringe at some of my former outfit posts, but I'm also grateful for the honest feedback and the help in taking my personal style to a higher level. Lately, in an effort to push my own style boundaries, I've thrifted a few items that ultimately do not work for me. It's been humbling to admit my mistakes, but at least I'm not out much money as I return them to The Great Circle of Clothes for someone else to love.

  5. I agree with the others. We're all in the same boat working towards finding things that work for us...or just enjoying the "process" of it. Don't lose the joy of experimentation. Ever! (Okay, so I'm reminding myself of this a bit now too.)
Neon is SO IN right now. And I love these wedges. They'll go great with so many things.
The nail polish color is fabulous. You know you've inspired me to start doing my nails....my fingernails that is. I think I'll try a pink color next. It may or may not work or be to everyone's taste (like the blue I tried last time), but it's a new adventure for me so let's just all enjoy and have fun! :)

  6. Thank you, guys. You buoy me.

This morning, I was feeling like such a failure. And this is blogging -- my relief from the horror and stress of my job. If I'm not getting joy here, then where? The obvious failures of this outfit depress me like a heavy weight, but you've shifted my focus back to the proper place -- learning. I can learn from my mistakes. And I will. Thank you.

  9. Hi Ally, As you know I am no fashionista however it would be a real shame if you took this post down. For all of us there are good outfits and not so good outfits and downright bad ones! This one is not downright bad however there are elements that could be tweaked!!! Kathryn made a really good suggestion about the black dress with this stunning colour peeking out at the bottom.

I must say, from a big footed girl, I LOVE YOUR SANDALS!!!! I am going to have to ask Taryn to go and look for a pair for me and send them on over the ocean.
